  • coolant level gau

Posted by Chuck on September 5, 2013 at 10:24 pm

The coolant low level gauge in my 1986 Liberty Prevost does not work. I have exchanged the dash bulb and checked that the wires are connected at the sending unit on the reserve tank. I cannot get the light to turn on. I have disconnected the wires at the sending unit, tried grounding them……. Any ideas. Thanks

Not really sure how it works, but my 1989 had a module located in the rear junction box which failed and caused the light to stay on.

An 86 model will be a non DDEC coach so I am not sure how it works. On DDEC equipped coaches low coolant is one of the three conditions that will light the check engine and stop engine lights and shut the coach down.

Just had that happen to me. Went to pull it out of barn and engine shut down.Tank level was low and it would start but all check engine lights would stay on and it a few seconds engine shut down. Refilled tank and no more lights. 1991 8V92TA.

I’d recommend immediately checking to see what is causing your coolant loss…. if it’s getting into the crankcase it can be an expensive repair if not caught in time. Pull your dipstick and take a look at the oil.

Oren, oil is fine and I had it tested by Detroit recently. I found the problem with the warning light and buzzer (no voltage on the line coming from the rear electrical compartment) but can’t figure out where the line connects in the electricl compartment. According to Prevost it goes from a 24 volt bus bar, thru a 3 amp fuse and to the + terminal on the sensor. I have tested for continuity by clipping on the line at the sensor and touching every line in the rear electrical compartment to no avail. Only thing I can think is the line is broken between the sensor and the electrical compartment. I will find it, just need a little more time.

found the problem with the coolant warning light. The wire was broken where it enters the rear electrical box.
