Coolant Leak
We made run to central Florida in April and upon arrival I thought we had lost coolant. I could not see any leaks in the engine area and so I closed the coolant valve to the front of the coach. I think I checked the expansion tank sight glass too early after engine shutdown and the hot coolant was above the top of the sight glass since the next day the coolant level was right in the middle as when I left. I reopened the valve.
After the run home, I did have a coolant leak, a good sized puddle on the barn floor and coolant below the valve. As seen in the picture it looks like the valve stem packing nut is leaking.
My questions are: what packing material do I use? Can I just back the packing nut off and add more or do I need to remove the old material? Do I need to completely drain the system to do the job or do you think it can be done fast enough to just top off the system after I’m done? The coolant is power cool extended life and is only about 3 years old. If I need to drain/change it I will probably take it to Jeff’s.
Thanks in advance.
