  • coolant filter shut off valve to placement?

Posted by Chas on June 17, 2016 at 9:28 pm

so how easy is it to replace the shut off valve that sits on top of the coolant filter without draining the coolant system? I have one that is leaking and I would like to do this while I am parked at my current location, but don’t want to deal with 10 gallons of coolant.

If you can close the valve 1/2 way you can then tighten the packing nut ,if it’s not a ball valve that will usually fix them from leaking

You should be able to clamp off the hoses if you have to change out the valve.

Thanks Peter and Tom for the advice.

Here is what I am dealing with. Peter, I am assuming you mean close the valve all the way (or open it all the way) and then twist it to about half way and then try to tighten the packing nut (nut that the valve steam goes through)?

Tom, if I in fact need to change out the valve, I will get a clamp to clamp the hose off (and close the other side off so it doesn’t feed into the filter).

I assume that the valve should be opened partially (maybe all the way then take a turn off it just to it’s not at the extreme)?

I would guess that if you screw that in partially then you will be able to tighten the packing nut on that valve

The only time the valves are used is when the conditioning filters are changed. I agree with Jeff and would take a 1/4 turn so to tighten the packing glands. But at the next cooling change I would also change those valves. A small internal leak that causes a small drip when changing the filters is not a big deal, but one leaking coolant out of the system when it isn’t supposed to is not good, expecially if you have pets that might be tempted to lick the coolant from the pavement.
