  • Coolant expansion tank

With the engine cold, should the sight glass of the coolant expansion tank show full or slightly less than that? Sorry if this has been asked before.

As long as there is coolant visible in the surge tank sight glass the coolant level on a cold engine is correct.

When the engine is cold if coolant is added until the surge tank is full or at least has coolant well above the sight glass, as the engine heats up and expands it is probable the excess coolant will be pushed out the overflow so it is best to fill until coolant is visible and maybe until it gets to the top of the sight glass, but adding any more coolant may be wasted.

I keep mine 1/2 way on sight glass cold and have never had an issue.
