Coolant Change
Well I bit the bullet and changed out the engine coolant. I’ve owned the coach just over two years and although I have a lot of maintenance records, the last coolant change was not among them. Coolant has been tested 3 times, all with favorable results, but it was time to be sure. I selected precharged Fleet Charge made by Old World Industries. They refer to this product as being a “fill for life” coolant. Start out with precharged coolant and a “blank” filter (no SCA’s) and after 18 months change out the blank filter for a Penray “need release” filter (contains SCA’s). Periodic testing is advised.
My bus has OTR and so I have an additional filter in the evaporator bay (mine is a Parker #925566 filter cartridge). I found it at Millenium Filters.
I was able to drain 17 1/2 gallons of old coolant without going to the extreme by pulling the interior apart. Fleet Guard is supposed to be compatible with other similar coolants. If my bus holds 24 gallons then I have replaced over 72% of it.
Biggest problem was removal of the old main filter. Destroyed the housing trying to remove it. Finally removed the bracket and got the spin-on removed using a 36″ pipe wrench with the bracket held in a vise!
Filters replaced and I was able to coax 16 gallons in (mixed coolant 50/50 with distilled water from Walmart). Started the engine, ran the OTR heat and was able to add remaining 1 1/2 gallons.
Will take on a test drive Thursday and see if there is any additional burping/filling needed. So far no leaks.
