  • Convenient 12vdc key on source

Posted by Jerry on August 15, 2021 at 6:02 pm

I am planning on testing one of the new Renogy 60 amp battery-to-battery chargers to charge one of my two LiFePO4 house battery banks from the engine alternator. The Sterling Energy 60 amp BtoB charger that charges the other Li house bank turns on as soon as it senses the alternator running and turns off when the alternator stops. The Renogy unit requires a separate 12vdc key on lead to turn it on/off.

Where can I find a convenient key on 12vdc source in the engine compartment? I prefer not to have to run a wire all the way from the ignition switch back to the battery compartment. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.

Rear electrical compartment above the engine.

Would the field sense terminal on the 50DN alternator regulator work.

If it only needs to see a current to turn it on that may work.

There are several 12 volt ignition on sources in the engine compartment electrical box as Tom points out.

Thanks, that yellow wire that turns on the field relay is what I thought would work well. It looks like all it would take is a ring terminal attached to that same post and a wire from there to the BtoB charger in the battery bay which is just in front of the drive axles in my coach. Sound right to you?
