  • Coach Storage Building – Advice

Posted by Ronald on December 20, 2017 at 11:08 am

I have a 30’x40’ workshop with a 29’x12’6” opening. I planned to move my Prevost into this workshop on my property but it appears I need another 1’ to 2’ in order to safely get her in place.

I contacted Hoover Buildings about opening the side and adding onto the building but they said the costs would be prohibitive. I then asked if they could raise the roof by 1’ to 2’. They said they could do that for $9900, and another $1,200 for a roll up door.

Any advice members of PC may want to provide will be appreciated. You can PM me, or we can discuss over the phone.

i spoke with one PC member here in Greenville that had a 40’x60’ storage building put on his property. I can do 60’ but I can do 50’.

if anyone has steel building contacts in the Greenville, SC area they trust they would like to put me in contact with, that will be appreciated.

Have you tried dumping some air and lowering the coach? What’s on top of your coach? Any chance you can lower the floor of the storage facility? From the pictures you posted I can’t tell if you can put an addition to the side, or maybe in front of the existing building.

Hi Ron, I had the same issue with my storage building. I had 12 ft garage doors and a truss height of 13 ft. my coach is 13′ 3″ to the top of the roof air. What I did was remove the garage door and all it’s framing up to the bottom of the truss. I then placed plywood scabs on both sides of the trusses over where the bus would be parked. I then cut out 4.5 inches from the bottom core of the trusses wide enough for the roof air to clear. Finished it off by building a 14 ft sliding barn type door to replace the garage door. The building engineer told me the truss would be stronger with the scabs even with the notches cut out.

You are less than an hour away from me if you want to see what I have done.

Thanks for the reply. I have not tried dumping. I believe I would have to reduce height by 6” to 8” to get the coach inside.

The floor is poured concrete. We have thought about bringing this one down and rebuilding to the height we need. The width is fine already.

Thank you for the idea. My entry opening is 12’6” so I will need to bring it up, too. I am going to recheck the truss height. This may be an option.

It may worth a look to see first hand what you did. It is always good to meet members of the PC to see what they have done to care for their Prevost. I will talk with Tammie about taking a ride. Any reason to get my girl out is good enough for me.

If you could get the coach into the garage, how much room would you have between the coach and the wall? Enough to open the bays, take stuff in and out? work in there?

OH WAIT!! That isn’t the OPs garage! Sorry.

Ron: Something doesn’t jive here. You have only 6’8″ of clearance in that building? It sure looks like more than that to me.

Building a bus barn with 2 stalls. With or without private divider wall. Owners stall and other is rented. Your expenses are covered with this arrangement.

Outside door width…..12′ 6″ this is suggested minimal width with extended mirrors on both sides.

    Door opening height….14 Feet

Inside length…ideal is 60 feet inside header to header. Opening engine room doors , drop front bumper, build small bench or position tool box on rollers.

Stall width 15-16 ft. allows slide usage.

All utility service suggested in front….This will prevent an emergency room visit when you hit your shoulder on what ever sticks out. Cord /water line simply lay on floor next to edge

Sewer hole ….25 feet forward from garage door opening.

Side entry access door ideal. In our case 7 stalls were constructed with people doors in front to reduce building length issue.

Must have mistakenly entered that number. I have 12’6” of entry clearance.

Currently stored in a unit that is 55’x15’ with a 14’x12’ roll door. Insulated ceiling and side walls.

I do not have room to expand to 55’ although I find it provides good working area with roll door closed. I can probably expand to 50’ by adding 5’ to each end. I plan to close in and add the roll door.

Thank you to everyone that has responded.
