    Hi all, I haven’t traveled this winter however every two or three weeks the coach gets started (and generator) and ran for about 30 minutes to exercise the engine. Three days ago, I went through my regular start up process, the engine started and a few moments later it shut down and the engine stop light came on. With the help of this forum and Florida Detroit Diesel, it seems that the oil pressure sensor has failed. Here’s my dilemma… I unplugged the sensor and attempted to start. From what I understand it should have started. The stop engine light did not turn on however the engine just spins and spins but no ignition. Is it possible that because Florida has dipped into the 30’s at night the last few weeks, could the fuel filters have sucked something that built up and clogged? The Coach currently has only a little over a 1/4 tank of fuel? I do treat the fuel with Howes 103060 ‘Diesel Treat’ Diesel Conditioner and Anti-Gel. I checked the oil level and it is full. I also disconnected a terminal to the batteries to reset the DDEC.

    Your thoughts?

    Plug the sensor back in and try it. Then check the coolant in the coolant tank.

    You might try to jumper the plug to “close” the circuit.

    When ever something is broke, my first step in finding out why, is to question what was the last thing I did, and could that have been the problem.

    The next step is start at the beginning. The engine spins so you have 24V, but do you have strong 12V needed for DDEC so my next test would be to check for current at and beyond CB 19, 20, and 21.

    If 12V power is there then I check sensors. I cannot speak with confidence every coach is this way, but if I had a stop engine light, I usually could start the bus, but then the SEL would time out and I would have shutdown. As described I get a sense monkeying with the sensor or its connection may be an area needing attention. After checking the easier stuff described previously that would be my next area to check.

    Hi Jon, finally got back to trouble shooting. It appears that I do have good 24 volts (double checked each connection). I metered each battery (There about 2 months old) and two were reading 15 volts and two were reading 13.43 volts. I found that a bit odd, but they all were at a good voltage.

    Regarding the SEl, at first the bus would start and then as expected it shut down. I did order a new Oil Sensor and coolant sensor. I have not installed yet. I did add coolant as it seemed low (I don’t see a way to tell if it is full – no eye to look at) and I only had a gallon with me. I will pick up a few at the auto store this afternoon. Is it possible that a solenoid could have gone bad, and the engine isn’t getting fuel? I have spares (24V) that the previous owner left. And thanks for giving some direction.

    I’m assuming by your response you verified 12 V to the CBs listed. Checking batteries requires them to be separated, otherwise just check total system voltages.

    If coolant is low it will cause a stop engine. However the engine should start, but then shut down. If it is fuel related it will not even start.

    Assuming you are talking about your 2 12V engine battery banks providing 12V and 24V, one should not be 15V (ever) and the other 13.4. Both banks should read the same and 15V is too high.

    As to the antifreeze, my ’88 had a cock valve on the tank. If you cracked it open and fluid came out it was full. If not, leave it cracked and keep adding fluid until it starts to run out.

    Sorry all, I’ve been busy so I will be working on the issues off and on this week. Thanks to all for giving me trouble shooting tips. I’ll post later this week if I have any sucess or no progress.
