  • Cleaned Cruise Air Condenser Units

Posted by Archived on November 7, 2019 at 10:57 pm

Cleaned two of our four Cruise Air condensers today. Used Extreme Simple Green for Aviation (aluminum). The units were extremely dirty and it is doubtful they have ever been cleaned, yet the Simple Green Aviation washed years of dirt and grime away effortlessly. As per the directions, I mixed with distilled water, then rinsed with 100% distilled water. I applied with a one gallon manual pump garden sprayer.

As seen in the photos, these units are exposed to road dirt, sand and grime via the fresh air intake hole cut in the floor (see chicken wire). After cleaning, I covered the chicken wire with a coarse weather resistant cut-to-fit air filter material hoping to prevent dirt and sand from entering while driving and I do not believe it will prohibit air flow as the material is not densely woven.

I know this cleaning project “helps” but I wonder how much. Will it make any noticeable cooling difference next summer? Lower amp draw? Lower compressor pressure?

Will do other condenser units, then move to evaporators. Two of the four evaporators are also very dirty, while two are not.

I would keep a sharp eye on the added filter under the condensing units. They in particular are very sensitive to air flow and anything that restricts air flow, even a little bit is going to have a serious impact on efficiency and may cause a condenser unit shut down due to high pressure.

Having said that, the interior filters on the evaporators are dirt magnets and should be cleaned at least annually or even more often, especially if there are pets. I clean my filters and toe space heater at the same time. Any accumulation of lint, dust, pet hair etc. on those filters will reduce the cooling efficiency a lot.
