Circus Circus KOA
Just read on RVBUSINESS that the KOA at Circus Circus is closing. MGM Grand that owns the 42 acre park has plans for creating a festival venue called Rock in Rio, open air venue. Too bad, we liked to walk to the Strip

That is too bad, believe that was the nicest place in Reno, even better when MGM, Hilton owned the park!

I think jim is talking about Las Vegas and are your talking about the campground at Grand Sierra in Reno? I was there for business this last year for 3 weeks…

It’s the worst RV park I ever stayed at!!! It’s a goat park. I stay at Las Vegas Motorcoach. It’s where you can go to sleep and not worry about panhandlers come and beg for $$$

It was a shithole driver but it served it’s purpose for us. We have stayed there many nights on our trips, I 15 is a main drag for us and we would even jump in the bus and do the 300 miles to go to dinner and the wife could go shop at the Forum.
What my dear cattle rearing friend doesn’t know is deep in the bellows of the Circus Circus is the best Steakhouse in Vegas. Old school red naugahyde booths, white table cloths and 4 fingers of whiskey. The only caution to be aware of is don’t touch anything on the way in from all the kids in there touching everything, open doors with your elbows and don’t touch the people walker railings.
We heard about it closing in Aug on our way thru, it is time for it to go. The power was getting questionable and the riff raff was evident.
Some of your cows could be served in there buddy.

We stayed in that RV park in about 1968. Our family had a popup tent camper and my Dad pulled it with his Oldsmobile 98 Luxury Sedan (126″ wheelbase). We went “out West” for two weeks. Left Shawano, Wisc on Sat morning and I believe we took Route 66 parts of the way out as we headed for the Motel 6 in Long Beach. We’d gone to our first Indy 500 a few weeks before which was won by Albuquerque’s Bobby Unser. In Albequerque all the stores had huge Congratulations Bobby Unser signs, the movie theatre marque’s congratulated him too. As we got to the edge of town, there on the south side of the road was the Unser family property! As I understand it, Bobby might still live there.
After Albuquerque we went to the Grand Canyon, then Vegas. I remember being in that RV park in the popup. I think my parents or my Mother and sister had a room at the hotel … air conditioning and running water. Circus Circus was really cool for teenagers because of the entertainment above the gambling floor. We could watch the table and slot action.
The return trip started with a blood run from LA to SFO. We had relatives in Placerville between SFO and South Lake Tahoe. Somewhere on that leg we rolling about 75mph in the 98 on the expressway or interstate and there was a chunk of steel junk (I think half of an air brake housing) in the middle of our lane. With a truck beside us Dad didn’t have anywhere to go. The 98 was pretty well loaded and riding low with five in the car, trunk full of stuff, and tongue wait from the popup so. The oil pan struck the piece of steel slicing it open. I was half dosing between my Dad and younger brother. I heard the noise, heard Dad say something, saw lights on the dash light up. I turned around and there was just a HUGE cloud of white smoke … just like when the engines blow at Daytona!
A highway patrol officer on a motorcycle stopped about five minutes later. We got the 98 towed to an Olds dealer and popup to a motel. A new oil pan was shipped out of SFO that afternoon, arrived in the morning, and we were back on the road before noon.
The RV park at the Circus Circus was an old one. Big deal in its day.
