Greetings from Cave City, Kentucky, where we will be staying for 2 weeks.
For the past 2-3 days I have been trying to find a place to stay in or near to Chicago. No joy. I spent several hours on the Internet and phone. To no avail. Either, the places were not big enough for us, did not have 50A, did not have FHU or were crummy places you would not want to spend time at. The places we could have gotten in are all booked in mid/late July (or do not take reservations) when we were hoping to spend a week or two in the area.
The other problem that I did not foresee (even though, in retrospect it makes sense because Chicago is a big city) – all of the places are anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours drive time away from the city and several of the RV parks referenced taking the train to avoid driving and parking costs.
So we will have to come back some other time.
Meantime, we will probably head-up the UP (starting from Elkhart). Perhaps, go as far as Petoskey.

at Michigan City Campground in Michigan City, Indiana. About 40 miles from Chicago. July 21 to July 31. Long pull-through with 50A FHU @ $56/night.

Interesting. Living two hours north of Chicago I never gave the availability of RV campgrounds much thought. A little surprised there isn’t anything. NYC has the Liberty Harbor Marina and RV Park.
Michigan City is a little hike around the bottom of Lake Michigan to Chicago; but not unreasonable. I think the train is also the option for you … look for the South Shore Something. We used to see the train when we took I-90 close to The Lake and then The Skyway into The Loop, but with the coach we take I-94 or I-294 through town.
After Chicago and Michigan City you can venture up the Lake Michigan shoreline to Holland. Its a very, very interesting place to visit. Lots of tulips at the right time.
Once you get to Ludington you can take the S.S. Badger across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin. The Badger was built to haul railroad freight cars so I think it should handle the coach. Once you get to Wisconsin, you probably won’t want to leave.
I’m surprised the city of Chicago didn’t put RV site on Meigs Field after Mayor Daley stole it in the middle of the night from the American public, pilots, and taxpayers. I consider him to be an unindicted and yet to be convicted felon over that transgression alone. I think they call it “North Island”.

Just Google McCormick Convention Center and select the „Bus / RV Parking“ link.
It‘s boondocking. No services at all.
But for the price, you can not beat it if you are in town for just a couple of days.
We have a window of opportunity in Mid-July and may give this a try.

Ronald I met someone at a rally a few years ago who said he parks there often. Said the gate guards just think it’s an entertainer coach and just to keep a low profile.

passing as an entertainer coach? Just go online and you may find a reference to Olivia being Lady Gaga‘s bus .. He he.
Besides, I am just the driver and not allowed to tell. I want to keep my job.

We have used McCormick Place many times. Easy in and out and very convenient location. 3-4 blocks to El or the cabs will come right to the bus. You cannot park your car downtown for double the price. You dry camp…but so what….most should do it more often. Geo.

Hello Geo, I just booked 3 night at McCormick and wanted to know if there was anything you could tell me in advance that would make the stay more enjoyable ? Like do they have a dump station and fresh water if needed , stuff like that . Thank you in advance . Al

I would imagine that there is a fresh water spigot at the actual building. We have never needed water, so I am not positive. As far as dumping, I doubt it. Come empty and full, you’d be fine for 3 days. Geo.

I have never been there. Somebody put on a website and per them nothing but concrete and semi security and access outside the gates for public transportation and probably Uber etc.

it’s a parking lot, not a campground or resort, dry camping 101. But oh so convenient and oh so reasonable. Last time I was there security was 24/7. Geo.
