  • Chevy GM 4 Wheel Drive Neutral Problems

Posted by Archived on August 30, 2015 at 8:53 pm

I’ve had some problems getting my 08 Avalanche transfer case to go into neutral. This is a big problem when your on a trip and all of a sudden someone has to drive the toad because the damn thing won’t go into neutral and I can assure you it’s a bad day for yours truly, mstruk threatened to leave it in Vonore, gasp!! I would get the message Service 4 Wheel Drive.

Took it to the local Chevy dealer up here in upstate NY and found out there is a programming update that cures the problem. 92.00 later, all is well again. So if you have this problem with your GM vehicle, git r done.

Also, had a running light out, 69.00 labor to change the bulb. Seems they have to just about tear the fender apart to get to it.

I was informed my Parkway warranty was Tango Uniform…

    Tom…

That’s the message we were getting in the new Suburban and there’s a fuse you can pull to reset that message … Hopefully the update ends the problem for you… we still get that on occasion but only after towing and trying to go back into gear… we pull the fuse for a minute then she’s good to go… bloody contrary thing !!

    Cheers, Diane

And to think on our first toad we just put the transfer case in neutral using the stick and we were good to go. Using a flip phone is also just as easy.

I had the same problem several years ago with a 2007 Silverado 1500 and I disconnected the battery for a minute or so and it apparently reset everything and it thenthe transfer case would go into netural.

I tried the battery disconnect as well and it didn’t help.

Don’t know about the year range George, maybe Roger will jump in here if he isn’t busy with warranty work.

One more reason I am glad we kept hunting for the 6 speed manual transmission/transfer case in our Dodge 2500. Towing is amazingly easy with that thing. Although coming from Price UT to Pagosa Springs CO, I will say I was a little tempted to have the wife get out and drive the truck. Could there be less flat land? Up, down, up, down, just kept going! Coach wasn’t happy with all those hills and a 2500 diesel truck with two motorcycles in the back of the truck.

Of course Tom, it could be worse. You could have a Nissan Xterra like my wife does. Cant flat tow that thing without disconnecting the drive line. Electronic this and electronic that, just makes things more complicated then they need to be.

That problem is common in that model year and later. I had a friend with a brand new 2010 Tahoe that was hooked up to his motorhome and all ready to go and it would not shift to neutral. Same fix…dealer flashed ECM and all was well.

ironic that you bring this up today. Because last night in no where Nebraska I had no luck in getting myransfer case to come out of neutral and re engage. Finally disconnected battery waited 30 minutes (my cool down period) then hooked up battery and it worked..

Have not tried since. I now call G.M. Obama motors!

Not sure BA, I’m still trying to count my fingers. I know when I left the lot, warranty ended at driveway, he was waving with a big grin on his face and yelled, “let me know if I can hep ya.” I think he was on the phone at the same time with that Suburu guy in Jersey.

You would think with all the dues money Tom gets, and the fact he doesn’t have to worry about replacing slide seals that he could buy a new car. But I do applaud his efforts to keep two of our car dealer members off the welfare lines.
