Check Your Fan Retention Spring
Once I pulled the alternator off, I found the cooling fan drive retention spring hanging by a zip tie. This spring, I assume, keeps some tension on the belt when the bellows is deflated. The zip tie was fastened to the alternator wire harness, good idea, otherwise the spring would have been long gone. That could be a problem if the spring comes off and makes it’s way to the fan, yikes….

I don’t have a spring, but I don’t have an alternator there either. Should I, without an alternator?

My spring was broken earlier this year and I found it when doing a walk-around after a trip. I ordered a couple of them, along with the retainer screw and put it in. Now I have a spare for next time it goes…..

There has been some changes in this spring tensioner. On my bus the angle attachment high tension support
cracked in the bend.

Top of support is notched downward into center of spring hole. A high tension screw holds spring top in place.
I changed the bottom spring support with drilling a hole in the frame rail. Prevost had punched the rail on bottom which put a lip that was supposed to keep spring in place. Actually over time the spring would slide off to the side. Had it not been for the upper screw used to hold the spring in place on top the spring just disappears.
Drilling a hole in the rail I installed a nut and bolt which only allowed the spring to move side by side slightly.
The mini air bag (not pictured) holds constant belt pressure.based on the length of the belt. I believe the spring set up was designed to firm up belt assembly limiting up and down bounce movement.
There is a new generation on this tensioner arrangement improving long term performance. My slight change has worked well for over 3 years.

I don’t have a spring, and since I have had the coach there has not been one.
I am not aware of any issues due to the lack of a spring, but then again the only thing on that arm on my coach is the fan drive so I don’t have an alternator or AC compressor.

Here is my new spring and screw. 2006 chassis FWIW. The screw is simply to retain the spring where it should be.
