  • Chassis Battery Charger Hook Up (Stupid Question)

Posted by John on May 29, 2018 at 3:21 am

Put this in catergory of me trying to avoid doing something stupid and/or expensive. I purchased a Guest Charge Pro 5/5 that has two 12V charging leads (lead 1 and lead 2). None of the illustrations show hooking the lead sets together for a 24 V charge. The bus has the standard four 12v batteries connected as two 12v banks of two batteries ( plus to plus and negative to negative). Can I hook lead 1 to one set of two batteries wired in parallel and the lead 2 the second set of batteries that are wired in parallel. Specifically concerning a 12v battery bank (two batteries in parallel), can I hook the positive charger lead to the positive battery post of the first battery and the negative charger lead to the negative lead of the second battery. This should give a 12v charge to each of the four batteries. If my assumptions are correct and this is an acceptable configuration, is there any detrimental effect on the equalizer?

Thanks in advance for sorting thru the description. I know a picture is worth a thousand words; but I could not figure out how to make a drawing.

Tom, Thanks for the diagram. I see that you have the charger hooked to a single battery of the two batteries connected in parallel. There was a diagram or discussion about hooking the positive lead to the positive terminal on one battery and the negative lead to the negative terminal of the second battery. Is there an advantage to one method over the other?

John: You might be referencing a diagram I posted at some time which I’ve attached.

Dick’s drawing is exactly how my Guest is hooked up.

Thanks for the drawing Dick. Saved me from having to remove the battery cover to take a photo. You’re OK in my book, no matter what Jon says about you.

Dicks drawing is what I used in my recent post. Pay close attention to fused (highlighted rectangle box) on leads and which battery batteries they go to.

Thank you. It looks like there are two ways to hook up the leads. One way is to hook both the positive and negative to one battery of the pair. The second method is to hook the positive to one battery and the negative to the other battery in the pair. Is one way better than the other given a smart charger is used?

Hook up just like Dicks drawing. I live by “if it ain’t broke don’y try and make it better” …because it works like the drawing. It’s why I had my son become a electrical engineering. Cause wiring is the same on missiles and toasters. No one quite can understands what all the those lines with numbers are doing on the drawing. He works on missiles now by the way.

No smoke! Thanks for the input and diagram. I did find one anomaly on the connections from the batteries to the equalizer. Based on the diagram on the battery access door, the 12V + to Ground is pulled from the negative terminal of the 24v + to ground set of batteries. I know this terminal is the same as 12V + to ground but it seems strange. Why not pick the 12 V input up off the 12 V + terminal of the adjacent battery? Hopefully The picture of the diagram illustrates what i am trying to explain.
