  • Chassis Batteries – Caution

Posted by Archived on July 31, 2018 at 9:10 pm

Be careful around your chassis batteries and never have your head in there when someone turns on the ignition.

This happened a week or so ago at Jeff’s and sounded like an air bag explosion. No one was near the rear and I believe all Jeff did was turn on the key and whamo.

What the hay caused that? Gremlins or Russians??

That is typically caused by a broken cell connector inside the battery. A load is put on the broken connector sparks in a explosive gas environment. All this happens inside the battery. Things go boom…

    Happened to me.

What a mess to clean up. Batteries were 4 years old. I now make sure that each time I start the engine, I turn the ignition switch to the first position, wait for all the relays to click, then turn to the start position. So far, so good (plus I replaced all batteries).

How many of you that had a chassis battery burst also use a battery maintainer or trickle charger? Be honest.

My guess is with Jon, they had likely been on charge and were gassing.

The batteries in the picture are over 6 years old, my guess would be that they had more than one weak cell at that age. If they make it to their 5 birthday I would replace them just from a reliability standpoint.

    Just my 2 cents
