chassis batt balance light
This ones got me a little puzzled. Before I start throwing parts at it, I’d like to know if any of you has experienced this issue.
Coach is equipped with OTR A/C. While idling at normal speed (I don’t use fast idle because I don’t like the harmonics) with OTR on, the balance light cycles on and off. Actual voltages are 27.5 staedy and cycle between 13.8 and 12.7. The 12 volt side charges up to 13.8 at which time charging shuts off and the voltage falls until it hits about 12.7 when it charges again. The balance light illuminates as the voltages decreases through about 13.4 and turns off as voltages increase.
I do not have this issue with fast idle or at speed. Voltages are steady at 27.5/13.8. Don’t think it’s the moniter because it appears to be properly monitoring an issue. Leaning toward the chassis batt equalizer???? but I can’t rule out bad regulator or chassis batt(s). I do have the Penntex alternator but it’s been on for awhile and this is a recent issue…could still be a screwy failure of some sort. Any thoughts?

I would suspect the alternator at engine idel is not keeping up with the current your systems are drawing from the batteries.
Don’t know at what RPM the alternator is at full output but when you idle high you don’t have any problems tells me you are most likely getting the required power.

It is doing what it is supposed to do. At low idle the alternator is having trouble keeping up with the power draw of the AC system which pulls a lot of power to keep the condenser and evaporator fans running.
If you listen to the equalizer when the engine is off and you have a charger on the chassis batteries you will hear it click on and off as it maintains the balance between the 12 and 24 volt sides of the circuit. The equalizer does no supply a steady voltage to the 12 volt side, but cycles on and off as necessary. I don’t know why.

Interesting. I have heard the clicking when the coach has been in storage and float charging. Odd I’ve never had this symptom before.
