Charging chassis batteries
Posted by Art on March 24, 2025 at 10:46 amI replaced the old Vanner 60-100 with the new Vanner 60-100 added fuses from Vanner to batteries. I keep the 24v and the 12v switches turned off while sitting in building. The batteries stay charged pretty well even after a few months of sitting. When I do charge I had installed a 24v smart charger years ago with the 60-100, I questioned Vanner about charging the Chassis batteries with the 24v charger not two 12v chargers and they said your doing it correct charge with 24v and Vanner will keep it balanced, If you use two 24v chargers you run the risk of hurting the Vanner

I keep trying to wake some of you up with some questions some stories, Nobody even Say’s a peep, Should I give up and drop this forum after over 8 years of being on here, Jon is the only one that says anything and I always appreciate it, After owning 2 Prevost 1980 Liberty and a 1997 Royale I still crave for knowledge, I can’t afford to take it in for everything it needs and I enjoy doing my own work,It’s 1 of my hobbies, So the forum has been a good source for info, Not anymore! Is it time to give up on the Prevost Community Forum???

Art,
I appreciate your efforts. As a noob Prevost owner, and a long term DIY guy I am thirsty for specific knowledge. I don’t find the FB group as tech oriented or hands on as the forum based groups. I have the skills from self maintaining coaches for 20 years, I just don’t have the specific knowledge. So it is in my best interest for the forums to stay well and kicking.

Art,
Every time i respond or try to offer help i get crickets. I know several others that quit responding for the same reason. I guess the first step would be for the askers to atleast respond with “i will take it under advisement” when someone besides Jon responds.

All,
I read the forum daily. I respond when I feel I have correct information but that’s very limited compared to the real hands on guys who regularly post. No response should not be the norm and must be frustrating especially for those who offer their detailed expertise. The expertise offered here and other sites is extremely valuable for all the owners and I hope members like myself that participate in limited situations would not be the cause of the real experts from continuing to post. Keeping all the Prevost and other coach sites alive and active benefits us all.
Keep posting everyone . We all need each others help and can help each other.

I guess there are people watching! When I installed the new Vanner 66-100 Battery Equalizer they Recommended adding 125 amp fuse on the 12volt cable from batteries to Vanner and 80 amp fuse on the 24v cable from batteries and started as breakers then to Bussman Fuses and Vanner also recommended 1 amp fuses from Vanner EM-70-D controller to Bus, And another thought on Fuses, On a Video I watched about Bus Bars and Lithium batteries he Installed from Bus Bar to power center a Large fuse that would protect batteries and cables If there was a short, But have not done that, Bus Bars Definitely helped, Looking forward to picking up windshields from Prevost in a couple of weeks and replacing broken glass on Passenger side from AZ trip. Jeff what is crickets?

I admit that on this topic I am clueless because my buses came with Liberty installed chargers and my use of them is extremely limited.
My bus is used between Labor Day and Memorial Day. The summer it sits in the garage, but I do not use the charger. Usually the batteries still have a sufficient charge when we hit the road, but if I do something that draws down chassis battery power I will use my battery charger which is a three stage charger.
I do know the charger cables do not go to the batteries and I suspect they might go to the equalizer cables but that is a guess.
I don’t even know if the charger is 12V or 24V so that will also affect how a charger is connected. I guess if I had to install the charger myself I would get a 24V three stage charger and connect it to the 24V terminal on the Vanner and the Vanner would balance the 12 and 24 volts as needed. I see no problem with the equalizer no matter how the charger is installed.
There is always DC power at the Vanner terminals and even if the bus is not running the Vanner always maintains the relationship between the 12 and 24 volt coming from the batteries.

Totally right Jon even with the 24v and 12v battery disconnect switches off, it still has power from batteries to Vanner
