  • Changed over to Lithium batteries

    Here is a up date on my change over to LiTime Lithium batteries. In December I pulled the old Lifeline AGM batteries out,There was four 8D 10 year old batteries in the bus,They were good for years but not holding a charge for long so time to go. I installed four LiTime 280 amp hour batteries, Charged them all to 100 percent Individually with a LiTime 40 amp charger. I wired them just like the AGM batteries Positive to Positive all 4 same with negative, Then near end to ground and far end to positive. We took a trip to AZ driving using the 50DN 12v to charge at 14v,My Victron 712 BMS showed fine the whole trip, When we got home not plugged in yet I looked at the bluetooth on batteries and found 1st battery SOC was 75% next 2 batteries 32% and the last battery was 100%.WOW. I ask a lot of questions and watched a lot of U-tube videos and what I got of of this was Bus Bars, So I pulled off all the cables charged all batteries to 100% and charge times matched all the SOC readings. I bought 2 bus bars and made new cables and wired them all up,All positive and negative cables all the same size and from bus bars to bus same size. It has been at least 2 to 21/2 months lots of testing a short trip and used bus to power house refer when we had power outage and SOC stayed with in 3 to 4 percent with no charging,batteries are all 40 to 43% and we are getting ready leave for a week trip so let Magnum inverters charge them,Still testing like if we were plugged in at a park or dry camping.I set Both Magnum 2812’s charge rate were set at 80% and charged for 2 hours like if we were dry camping and running generator,Batteries went from 40% to 90%, then set inverters to 40% like we were plugged in for 4 more hours. Now 3 batteries are 99% and 4th battery is 97%. Way better charging them together they came together 1% I’m good with.

    Can you describe how you isolate the alternator from directly charging the lithiums. My understanding is the low resistance of the lithiums will result in too much current from the alternator if batteries are in low charge state. How did you supply both 12 and 24 volt?

      The Royale uses the DN50 12v to charge the House batteries driving the DN50 stay’s around 14.1 to 14,2 volts even after driving for hours, some others on the forum do the same. I was told that most regular motor homes like my Foretravel or Manaco’s have 1 alternator that charges both sets of batteries House and Chassis batteries so it can’t charge Lithium’s and Lead acid at the same time so you need a DC to DC charger to charge just the Lithium’s from the Lead Acid batteries. Where most of our buses at least Royale’s the House and Chassis batteries are totally separate they have 2 alternators so the 2 set’s of batteries charge differently. Everything I’ve read the Lithium need to charge at a little higher voltage if they are 12v they need to charge at 14.2v to 14.6v
