change out 315 tires to 365 tires
Posted by Wilbur on September 2, 2014 at 4:45 amI have a friend that has an 03 Marathon and wants to change out his 315 front and tag tires to 365’s. He called me last night and asked if I knew where the best place to buy wheels. I don’t have a clue and wondered if anyone else did.

Does your friend know about PC and that he can probably get any of his questions answered here?
The wheels are Alcoa and he can likely buy them from Alcoa or it’s dealers. He will have to replace the studs.

Wilbur,
I bought mine from Truck Wheels. Truck Wheels
Your friend will need 22.5 X 10.5 Hub Pilot Wheels. I paid 4590 each. As Jon pointed out, he’ll need the studs changed out from stud pilot to hub pilot. You get the studs from Prevost. Suggest you get him to call Jeff at East Tennessee Luxury Coach for the stud work. Tell your friend to get his tires here at PC for the Michelin Discount Program.

Hey Tom, if he does the front should he not do the tags to have a spare for road repair.
I understand those tires were designed for the Prevost and may not be readily available every where.

Buddy,
He said tag and steer in his post, is the LA heat gitten to ya..

Excellent. This is where he can get all the answers, and on occasion he may even get a correct answer.

I
changed the steer axle tires only, but after talking to the people at Marathon
in OR I will be changing the tag as well. Leon at Marathon tills me that it is difficult
to find the 365 tire however if your steer tire blows you can take one of the
tag tires to replace the steer and , limp to a parking spot at 30 MPH. Please be sure to till your friend to change both I know it will a $6-7 K hit but it is better to plan for the what ifs. -
The heat is getting to me. Why do I wear glasses, maybe I need to clean them.
Thanks
Love those wheels !!!!!!!!!

Has anybody here on PC had a front 365 fail? If so, what was the failure mode? Where you driving when it happened?
-
I had a 365 that developed a thump-thump and pulled off at the next exit and it had 2 blisters on the inside of the left front tire, one was the size of a fist and the other was the size of my hand. The tire dates were 5 years and 2-3 months old, this coach was purchased new but was in Liberty’s inventory for over a year when I purchased it and had 18,000 miles on it so it is entirely possible that the tire could have been operated with low pressure at some time.I have a friend that has a Newmar with 365 tires on it and he caught the tread seperating just before a trip, again this was a coach that was in the dealers inventory for some time and could have been operated with low pressure.

I changed only the fronts. I’ve kept my tire pressure at 105 psi and had no problems over four years. You can probably save money but Prevost JAX has a bulk price that includes studs, wheels & tires plus it saved me time having to fool with all the detail.
The first thing I did after buying my coach, was to buy eight new tires. I know where my tires have been and how they have been taken care of. There is nothing more important.
Additionally, Michelin has approved mounting a 315 on your 365 rim, temporarily, to get you down the road to a place that has a 365.
Keep in mind, that 365’s are overkill & if taken care of should not fail. I can’t imagine not taking care of your tires. Pressure Pro really helps in this regard.

if your friend still has his 315 Tags and Steer Wheels I might be interested in them for my 2001 H3..
I am actually going down the road toward a “Lighter”. Coach. (Working on it anyway) and plan on staying with all 315’s.

My previous coach was all 315, my current has 365 tag and steer.
With the increased axle weight compared to the last coach if I had 315 tires they would be at max pressure, but still within the weight limits for 315 tires.
Unfortunately I didn’t have a choice, but I would be very interested in learning if the benefits of 365 tires outweigh the benefits of all 315 tires. I do know that having all 315 tires means all tires and wheels are the same and if there is a tire failure there are many options. Any tire and wheel can go anywhere on the coach. The ability to find a new or good used tire is much greater with 315 tires. A closely sized substitute can be used in a pinch. There is much less noise transmitted to the inside of the coach with 315 tires.
On the other hand 365 tires do seem to ride better. The coach tracks better and is less affected by crosswinds and passing trucks, but right now I don’t know if that is because of 3000 to 4000 pounds of greater steer axle weight or the difference between IFS and solid axle.
Has anyone that has gone from 315 to 365 tires been able to quantify the benefits? Really measured the differences? I think the rush to change tires might be a way to keep up with the Jones’s, but for the bucks involved is it justified in view of the drawbacks? I understand if your conversion is at the weight limit for 315 tires because there is no margin for safety.

I can give my take on the change over, but only drove about 3,000 miles before I changed to 365’s. I did the change mainly due to steer axle weight and having to run the 315’s at 125 psi that resulted in a harsh ride.
Since the change, I’ve driven about 6,000 miles and the front end ride is great since I’m now using 105 psi. I do think there is a difference in the way the bus tracks going down the road, it was good with the 315’s, but the 365’s made it even better.
If the steer axle would not have been near gross, requiriing high tire pressure, I would have stayed with 315’s.

We noticed a big difference when we upgraded to the 365s steer and tag on the Vantare… The Hs are heavy on the steer and with the slides even heavier.
We had a softer ride and a better feel behind the wheel… money well spent for us !!
