  • CB radio has a bad humming noise

Posted by Andre on June 9, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Installed a new Galaxy 979 CB radio and FireStik antenna. Seems to receive really well, but has a constant hum whenever the radio is powered on. Any advice on what to do to get rid of the hum? I have palyed with all the controls and they make no difference in the hum.

Does it do it when the engine is off, when the inverters are off, when the charger is off? If it disappears when the engine, chargers and/or inverters are off you will need to ad a noise filter to the dc power going to the radio. This is somewhat common.

    Here’s an example: http://www.newmartelecom.com/PDF-Catalog-Spec-Sheets/Newmar_Noise_Filters_&_Automatic_Power_Selector_150A_PC-10_PC-25_APS-70_APS-160.pdf

The 10amp one should be just fine. Newmar tends to be a bit pricey, but they make a good product. You can check Amazon or Radio Shack as well.

One thing that might help is to power it directly from the house batteries. With all the wires and terminals and circuit breakers available on my coaches in close proximity to where the CB is located, Liberty has run the power wire all the way direct to the house batteries where it is connected and fused.
