  • Can’t Find A Replacement Exhaust Blanket

Posted by Tim on August 19, 2020 at 1:00 pm

To work on the turbo to muffler section of the exhaust pipe on our coach (2001 Marathon, XLII) requires that we remove the insulation blanket to get at the clamps and piping. The insulation blanket on our coach is extremely deteriorated. The outside material is torn in a few places and the insulation inside has crumbled, is falling apart, mostly gone, and no longer does it’s job. We have tried Prevost for a replacement but the original part number for the exhaust blanket (Prevost 050537) has been superseded and the new part number (Prevost 040652) does not come close to fitting. We are working with Prevost Parts to try and find a replacement, but no luck so far. I don’t think that the commercially available “header wrap” is going to do well enough to protect the Webasto where the exhaust pipe comes close. We are currently pursuing and custom made exhaust blanket but that may take awhile.

Has anybody else run across this problem, and if so, what was the resolution?

    Any ideas?

There are a lot of options, some that require a lot of work, some that are cheap, and some that look excellent.

I just did a search looking for “exhaust system insulation material” and got pages of options.

    Tim,

Since the Webasto was Converter installed making the blanket a necessity, maybe Marathon was involved in sizing the blanket and could help you. Just a thought..

I have had numerous exhaust blankets for boats made at De Angelo Marine Exhaust Inc in Ft. Lauderdale FL. Send them the old one, they make a new one. Call them first to confirm their work load.

Thanks all. The old one is falling apart. I’ll check them out.

I called a few exhaust blanket manufacturers. Of the ones I called most were reluctant to even discuss making just 1 custom exhaust blanket. Some wanted me to order 5 or more of the example that would fit our coach or the length needed to be much longer to make it worthwhile for them. Of the manufacturers I called only one was agreeable to making just 1 custom blanket.

That company was Firwin Corp. They made me a custom fit blanket at a very reasonable price. The only complication was I didn’t have have a reasonable way to send them accurate dimensions, mostly the angles and the twists. I sent them our exhaust pipe from the turbo exit to the muffler to exactly match what we needed. The exhaust blanket that they made fits perfectly and is of excellent quality.

The only thing that added complexity to the process is that Firwin Corp. is in Canada. If I were to recommend to someone how to get a custom exhaust blanket made, I would recommend that they make a few more calls than I did and use a U.S. company to make it a little easier.
