Canadian Atlantic Province RV caravan.
Posted by Archived on August 30, 2015 at 11:45 amWe are considering a RV Caravan through the Canadian Provinces in summer of 2016.
Have any of you done this? Have any of you ever been on any type of caravan before? If so, how did you like it?
There is a 58 day trip next summer with Adventure Caravans called ‘GASPE & THE ATLANTIC PROVINCES’, they have 3 departure dates.
Thank you,
Mark

Mark go on your own , I go to just about every province every year for the last 30 years ihave been across Canada twice this year , you can go on your own no times or dates enjoy what you want and leave when u want
give me a call if you want 1-307-331-5801 . I just talked to Rodger about going up there this fall -
Thank you for your input Peter.
I had looked at a Caravan trip in the past with our other motorhome but we always just did things on our own. We drove around lake Superior in 2008. And, other trips to Canada without the motorhome (train, etc.).
The thing that strikes me as being interesting is everything is planned and they have ‘free’ days included to do your own thing. I like the idea of a ‘tail-gunner’ following the group in case a hose pops, tire deflates, etc.
Since these folks have done this many times, they know the correct camping spots, etc.
Just thought I would ask to see if anyone had partaken. :o)

Mark,
Research that well, I have a feeling a new 45′ Liberty might not fit well.

Tom,
I will surely check to see if a large coach will fit.
Would really like to know if anyone has taken a Caravan trip.
Thanks,

Many times, you can preview the itinerary of such caravan trips. So look closely to determine if the agenda appeals to you. Not only in regards to where the caravan stops but also for how long. To have a gunner traveling behind you may sound good but that is only important in the context of staying with the program, i.e. they try to make sure that your problem gets fixed so that you stay with the caravan and do not delay all the others. Then there is the cost of a caravan. I very much doubt that you get any substantial discounts. So in the end, it is a question of are you comfortable traveling alone or do you prefer the “safety net” of a group.

Mark,
I have not personally been on a caravan but we have close friends that did a 40+ day canada/ alaska and they said they would never do it again. They said they really missed the freedom to do what they wanted when they wanted. We spent a fair amount of time in Canada on our way to Alaska and too really enjoyed the freedom to move on when we were ready and stay longer when we found a gem we weren’t expecting. We had some issues in Kamloops BC and guess who was calling me to help me PC’s own Peter C. We were able to meet for cofee in Banff.
Good luck with whatever you decide -
Mark…
I’m not sure that “size” was what Tom meant…??

Mark, if having a gunner following you gives you comfort you might want to rethink that. When we have seen these caravans over the years they are typically set up around smaller conventional RVs and maybe the guy might be quite adept at getting a typical motor home back on the road, but he will likely not have a clue how to help you if a slide will not retract or you get a stop engine light from a bad sensor.
I cannot speak for others, but when we took month long trips we had an agenda that had us visiting specific locations along our route, but we learned some days 50 miles was all we wanted to drive because we wanted to relax, or 400 miles was what we wanted to drive because we were excited about where we were going. My point being we really liked having no schedule. We really enjoyed being able to stop somewhere completely unexpected to enjoy something we never anticipated.

Well, your responses have me rethinking the idea, we have no problem doing things on our own.
Diane, Tom’s statement did go over my head, I wasn’t even thinking that we might stand out. LOL!
Safe travels,

Mark…
DY and I joined a Fantasy tour last summer. We had never done a caravan, so we chose a short one, (16 days) to get a sample. We enjoyed some parts of it, but, overall, we came away not convinced of its value. One positive was ability of the tour company to create day excursions, generally on tour buses that would be very difficult to duplicate on your own. We also enjoyed meeting and getting to be friends with some of the other travelers.
So it was a mixed bag….sorta doubt we’ll do it again. We manage to plan our trips and activities to suit our own schedule…we’ve always been happy with that.
