Things will likely go well if you keep to the Interstate’s despite the fact that you are illegal throughout the State. CA used to be 60 FT max. and the extension to 65′ hasn’t helped that much.

It’s just a matter of who decides what things they want to enforce that week/month and if you fall into that trap or get by. Much like the 55 MPH limit while towing. Your speed limit absolutely is 55 in CA with a towed but it is enforced in a completely random manner.

I have been under the impression that overall length laws are strictly DOT and that no state can pass their own regs on length, except on state roads that are not federally funded, and the DOT regs apply only to commercial operators.

Am I wrong or under false impressions?

The Indio area is notorius for overlength ticketing. I have received one ticket there on I10 (he did not make me drop the trailer) and a warning on the 101 somewhere on the central coast. I’ve also heard of issues on the Grapevine. I do not drive over 59 mph in an effort to try to avoid attention.

Lest you become overly alarmed, I have quite a few tow miles in Ca over many years. I do, however, avoid the Indio area.

i will probably regret this but I have been driving in CA up and down every corridor and all the big boowho spots for 13 years at 75 feet long and have not been looked at twice.

There are stories about the CHP who would patrol Indio hill up to Desert Center and he would make you unhook. In my 13 years I have never seen him and now the stories are he retired.

I live 10 minutes from Indio and the bullshit runs deep at MCCC and Desert Shores so believe what you want this is my experience.

You don’t want to travel 101 N of the valley because it’s restricted to truck and weight limits.

And remember boys once you leave the friendly confines of the Coachella Valley you are in Chancy country, beware.

I believe length limit depends on what state you are licensed in. Different states have different length limits so if your from a state that has a limit of 75 ft then your good in all of North America with that length.

We drive in CA bit… I just left this AM on I 10. We are over… but just by a foot. I haven’t had any trouble myself. I stick to speed limits and on the freeways, I go 62 as do most of the trucks. I was passed by 2 CHP and drove by 2 more shooting laser. Didn’t get stopped.

I would be prepared for a hassle, but not worry too much about it. All cops in CA have plenty of other crime to deal with as they continue to reduce penalties there
