  • bus air leak finally found

Posted by Georges on June 4, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Took my H3 to a recommended mechanic today for some diagnostics. What was initially “fixed” by the place I bought it from (by recharging the A/C system), turned out to be a little bit more than that, as the freon has all leaked out again…..the compressor shaft is leaking and needs to be fixed.

Any experiences out there with this problem and estimates on difficulty of repairs for this?

    Two (2) Items here:

Compressor shafts at the “o” ring seal leak due to… age. Fresh seal replacement solves the problem.

If the shaft has a ridge cut in it this will have to be examined to make a call on just seal replacement or entire compressor. As for repair no big deal. Maybe finding a replacement compressor ….could be. Keep in mind A/C systems are repaired all the time and leaks can began at any time. I would not blame the shop as the source of the leak problem. A/C repairs these days are tested with electronic leak detectors after service and that checking equipment can smell a fart at 100 yards. After running the A/C and pressure builds all things change.

Back in the service days, we had customers that just recharged the A/C once a year and never did the needed repairs. If you have a 134A system this is maybe all you want to do. With R 12 the freon expense would be a little expensive.

Did you check on e-bay for a compressor ?

Would this be the right part?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/DETROIT-DIESEL-8V92TA-BENDIX-TUFLO-700-8921208-AIR-COMPRESSOR-/400257007239?hash=item5d312d3e87&item=400257007239&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

I have bus air, 3 cruise airs, the toilet flush, the water in the sinks and shower. Do all of them run off of one compressor?

    George,

I took my H3-40 to Jake Baker at Transport A/C, Inc in Ft Myers (239 693-8211) for the same problem. He replaced the seal and whatever else needed attention. The whole thing cost less than $1K and I was very satisfied with the way we were treated.

If you decide to replace the compressor, I suggest you google the Carrier O5G -41CFM. I think you will find a remanufactured unit for around $1500. Be warned that is is a heavy piece and you will still need a pro to do the installation.

    Good luck

Uhhh, I think you may need to decide if you have an Over the Road air conditioning compressor issue or a compressed air issue.

The ebay compressor you have shown will supply compressed air to all the suspension and brake functions as well as pressurizing you auxiliary system.

The air conditioning compressor compresses refrigerant in order to cool the bus while on the road.

    Chuck,

I went to Ebay and typed in “8v92 air compressor”, just to see what was out there and that is what came up.

My problem is with the OTR air system.

    Thanks.

If the leak is around the seal on the AC compressor behind the clutch, if everything else with the compressor is OK it makes sense to replace the seal. My guess is a couple of hours plus less than $100 for the seal.

A huge clue if the seal is the source of the leak is behind the clutch it is likely to be dirty with grease and oil.

I would probably close off the valves while working on the compressor and check the balance of the system for leaks also. That can be done by pulling a vacuum and making sure it holds, or after doing that pressurizing with nitrogen. Any good shop can do that. Based on the age of the coach however I would make sure the compressor was in good shape, the cylinders are not scored and the valves are good. Otherwise I would shop for a remanufactured compressor. Sometimes Prevost runs special sales so it will not hurt to check with them.

George , There is a sealer called Red Angel i have used it on several leaking systems if yor system will hold a valcum for 30 minutes it will most aways fix the leak . It has worked in that black dodge you meet me in at mcdonalds for 4 years on a compressor leak . It cost about forty dollars i get it at napa any a/c garage can add it if they have an oil injection device it is only about 2 ounces. A/C shops dont like it because it takes a lot of high dollar work from them . I have also used it in the H1 hummer the blue on at my house in Deleon Springs . You remember me yet ? I would be glad to get you a bottle if you want to give it a shot . it is not a short term fix but as i feel a good thing to have in any system sort of like insurance . They also make a product called Blue Devil that i put in cooling systems of all new built performance engins . You are the drummer i hope
