  • Bus air condensation

Posted by Dale on July 3, 2015 at 8:06 am

I think I have an odd thing going on… Or at least I’ve never seen anything like it. My bus air (OTR) works great! Almost too great! I have to be careful not to completely fog the windows up! But one thing I’ve noticed is the amount of water that pours out of it. I know about condensation. The strange thing is, mine only pours the water out when I shut it down.

I first noticed this when I would stop for fuel. I usually start the generator and turn off the main engine. water would literally be pouring out of the bottom of the bus. It looked like the water tank was being dumped! I just assumed that because it was so humid, it was doing this all the time. But last week, I was passing through Clear Lake, SD and hit town just in time to be caught in their rodeo parade. Actually, it was kinda fun! My a/c fan is very loud, so after a few minutes in the parade I shut it down to stop the noise. Immediately, a woman on the street yelled that my bus was leaking. I could see I think us hinge in my mirror. I told her it was just the a/c, then I flipped the system back on and I think stopped. On the rest of the trip, I tested it a few times. I’d be going down the interstate and flip the switch off and water would pour out of the bus. Flip it back on and it stops.

Is that normal? Shouldn’t it just drip out of the system all the time instead of pour out just when I turn the system off? I don’t want to rust anything out, or short anything out.

on condensor melting-usually sign of dirty coil or poor air flow. 2 Fans on condensor? 1 out? Just a place to start looking. Also low freon. Bob

Dale, my coach drains all the time when using Prevost AC. One drain on drivers side middle of coach and front right in front of door. It puts out a lot of water out when the humidity is high down here. Sounds like yours is freezing on coils and ice is melting after you shut it down. Check freon like Bob said.

I will have the freon checked. I know that when they converted my bus to R134, they just took the cheap route and only replaced a couple of hoses. I’m sure it leaks out over time. It is confusing how my bus gets so cold if the freon is low though. I can seriously get my bus down into the mid 60s with 9 people on the bus when it is near 100 degrees outside.

As as far as fans… I know I have the single motor that turns the two squirrel cage fans. Had to have my motor rebuilt last year.. Or at least had brushes replaced. It was giving quite a light show.

Im not sure if anything is actually freezing. When I turn off the switch, it immediately starts pouring out gallons of water. It is not gradual like melting. But I don’t understand this thing so I am not discounting anything. Thanks for the advice. I’ll start with freon and go from there.

Glen and Bob nailed it. BTW, after a while, if you are icing on the evaporator eventually the fogging is going to go away because you will not get cool air flowing through the system until the ice on the evaporator is melted.

I had a problem with the drains that a Prevost Tech called rubber duckies,as they get older they seem to get sticky and not drain the water from the condensor
