burnt 50amp cable
Posted by Bill on June 25, 2022 at 12:00 amOk so what causes this? We are now running off the gen and concerned that we may be doing further damage to internal wiring.
This has happened to 2 different cables and both sides of the coach. It has been over about a 4 day period.
The outside power “appears” to be ok when looking at the surge guard. Is this a correct assumption?
Thanks so much

is this is at home? first reaction is bad ground somewhere in system. Or grounds bonded somewhere in system. Only a observation. A cheap 3 prong checker you can plug into standard wall plug will tell you if you have open line or ground is compromised. Elect is a shot in dark unless you can test yourself. Camp grounds are questionable in some of their wiring practices. Some I have hooked up to have earth and common bonded together! Bob

Both the surge protector and this gizmo say the power is good. I also used a got meter and readings are 121, 121 and 243.

Sorry pic might show red led but it was only from the flash. It was 3 greens.

Check the plug in the coach for corrosion. The cable shown plugs into the coach and the other end may be causing the issue. It is overheating from resistance. Typically a bad connection, ie corrosion, loose connection.

The cable is burnt also. The big RV places opens at 11 on I4. I plan on buying both the male and female ends and replacing.
This is just a thought and I welcome any input. Been running on generator since last night. We are in FL so we ran all 3 cruiseairs. This morning the middle one was shutdown and has a Lo PS warning. This has been happening for a few weeks. About once a week I turn it off and back on and it works fine. I am going to take it to Clearwater Luxury Coach but I have just not had a chance. When I turned it off and back on this morning I noticed that it had a larger draw on the generator than I previously remember. Maybe it’s just me. I turned it back off and just left it.
Could a cruiseair possibly cause this type of issue that I’m having with the plug?
I will report back later after I hopefully have the above mentioned replaced.
We will also move this thread to electrical.
Thanks for the help.

yes hard start of a compressor = excessive amp draw= overload. could be as simple as start capicator.
-
My guess is loose neutral in the shore power breaker box since its happening on both sides and seems ok on generator. . The bus bar could be loose or they landed the neutrals from both sides on the same lug and it is loose or corroded.

Two thoughts come to mind: 1) LO PS means it is probably low on freon. Running it may destroy compressor; 2) could be a bad START and/or RUN capacitor.
If your bus is like our 96 Liberty XL? both the mid and fwd CruiseAirs are on L2 which puts a 30 amp load it which shouldn’t do that damage, unless??? something(s) that others have stated here. -
Ok so here is where I’m at. Went yesterday for my trip down I4. Went to 4 places that were open (most were not). All of the places that were open had less than half of the inventory of my last visit. Finally ended up at the parts counter at Camping World. Older guy behind the counter was super helpful and even looked in the back for both the male and female 50amp parts. He returned with neither, but offers to call the Camping World in New Port Richey. They have the female part for sure. After another 50 minutes I arrive and find the plastic (not stainless) part on the self. I do not see the male end. Ask the service guy (kid), he went and looked in the other building and they had nothing. My only option was to buy a whole other cable for $459. Plus the $65 or so for the other part. This guy was also super nice and after explaining my dilemma, he worked some magic and I walked out for just over 400 bucks. I have to give Camping World credit to have 2 very competent employees in this day and age.
Came back, sat in the near 100 degree FL heat and tore the passenger side electrical connector apart. You can see from the pics that it was not a pretty sight and it even smelled horrible. I cut back far enough to where the wire seemed ok. The I lightly sanded it. I then installed the now unit. I was very happy to find out that Marinco uses the exact same 30 year old or more design for the cheaper plastic version of the part as the stainless one. I could simply remove 3 small screws and fit the inner plastic piece in my original stainless housing. Fit perfect.
I plugged in the new cord to the surge protector and then into the coach and it has been good to go. I continually check both ends of the cable and both are as cool to the touch as they can be in FL, in June.
I have not run the middle AC since the change. I am in the shade so the bus is staying plenty cool with just 2. I may wait another few days and turn it on. I will monitor the cable temp for awhile when I do.
I also have other stuff coming from Amazon to replace the female on the drivers side and both of my old cable ends.
If anything else changes I will let you know.
Thanks again for the help!

Bill, So both cords had bad connections on them? I wouldnt have guessed that. Glad you got it figured it out.
