Broken plastic fan
I have the plastic radiator fan on a 8V92. Today I was looking at it and notice that it has big chunks off the ends of the blades. What could cause this?

Other than the blades failing, which seems very remote, it’s possible some road debris of some kind got caught up in the fan. Can you see any sign of other damage such as radiator fins, shroud, etc.

Maybe interference. Check to make sure nothing is in the path of the fan blades. If so the obstruction should be obvious as it too should show signs of contact with the fan.

I see no other damage or marks on the fins. At first I thought it was squirrels chewing on the blades but they look like they hit something in broken, only half of the them are broken. I look so more for sign. I hope I don’t have to pull the radiator to replace.

The fan can be replaced without pulling the radiator. If only some are damaged or missing pieces I would be concerned about balance and vibration.

Greg, this is long shot.
I was at a CC rally many years ago and a brand new Affinity started up one morning and WHAMO, fan through the radiator and tow truck was called. A possum got up in the shroud overnight and when he started it up, the possum went bye bye the hard way.
I only mention this because your fan is full time on the 8V and could have caught a critter sleeping. The series 60 wouldn’t have been a problem as the fan would have been on idle.

Was that at the CC rally in Amana Iowa ?
There was a brand new out of the box Affinity I saw being towed away and they assumed a critter started the destruction of the engine compartment.
From that day on I have always done a 360 around the bus opening the engine compartment, looking inside before starting.
Those critters just look for the nice warm spots for the night.

Prevo secifies in their manual to only hand clean the fan with diesel fuel and not pressure wash or steam. I don’t know their reason for sure but can guess and maybe it is only because such power sprays might damage the adjacent radiator.
Just sayin.

coyote got the cat but I at one time had a big squirrel nest above the engine transmission area. Maybe I just notice the broken fins but it is so obvious. I will look at the fan on start up and see if it is hitting anything since the air piston belt tightener needs air to do it’s job.
