  • broken down with leaky norgen valve

Posted by Chas on October 12, 2014 at 4:31 pm

I have a leaking morgen valve in the front steer compartment that is keeping the coach from airing up.

This is the valve on the back wall with a hose going in on top and two ports on bottom. Only one port is used. Unused port is leaking.

Stuck in birmingham and not sure if t can be driven.

Charles, For now just thread in a 3/8 pipe plug.

I shot from the lip when I said that, so just verify after doing that the bus comes to the driving height. It could be the Norgren is bad, or one of the solenoid valves in the 5 valve stack is not closing.

Tap it firmly. The spool might be stuck. Jon has short term fix. That valve looks new.. Bob

So I did some thinking and rethinking about what I did differently.

Normally I start the bus up with the level system where it was when I parked it (normal, manual or auto). I then let the pressure get to about 100PSI, turn it to high idle and let the system fill to 130 PSI. I then keep it on high idle and turn the air ride to normal/drive and then wait for it to come to full ride height.

This time I jumped the gun and set the air ride to normal/drive with it at low pressure and normal idle. I think the release valve on that norgen valve never had enought pressure to close.

So I decided to set the air to manual, lower the bus all the way and turn it off. Waited a couple minutes, restarted, set it to high idle and fill, then set to normal/drive. It then filled to ride height properly and showed no sign of leak.

By no means will I be comfortable with just letting it go so will be getting that valve and some other replaced soon. This was on my next list of “things to do so Jeff can have some of my hard earned money” 🙂

Well that and the front of the coach has been squating after two days of sitting so we know there is an air leak up there somewhere.

Made it home from Alabama, stopping a couple times to check for air leaks and proper ride height. Had no issues. Hope for the same for a trip up to Knoxville soon.

The Norgren does not look flat faced new ones are flat faced valves , those look old

Just as a general comment, When a Norgen does not shift the probable cause is a failure of one of the solenoid valves in the 5 (or 4) stack manifold. Butr what Charles describes sounds more like an older Norgren that has a spool “dragging” either due to the loss of lubricant over time, or as the result of moisture damage.

Bob was right on with his advice if that was the case because that sharp rap with a hammer would likely have jarred it loose.

    Thanks Jon and others…

From my understanding the solenoids would control air through those solenoids to the areas they feed. I am suspecting if one of those were bad, I wouldnt necessarly have air coming out of the actual norgren valve from that port. I do have spare solenoids with me, but not that norgren valve setup.

Have drained the air system and made sure the air dryer is serviced (I think that is what was called the “auto spitter” at the ralley in Florida?). Also check the system for water every couple weeks and haven’t seen excessive water.

Even with all that, I will be swapping that norgren valve out on my next service (as well as look at other components for age/leaks and swap them out).

If the below valve is the one that is leaking ( 2 position spring return) it is possible like Jon stated that either one of two things is going on: (1) moisture has corroded the body in which case you need a new valve or (2) the O rings and spool are dry and could stand a littlle o ring grease or simply rebuilt.

As you see here I’ve disassembled mine to check for moisture damage, there is none so I put in new O rings and reassembled. Works like new

The solenoids control the Norgren valves by applying air pressure to the pneumatic operator on the Norgren.

Depending on your switch positions you could have a Norgren getting pressure on the actuator that controls the dumping of air in your air bags. Did you lower the front for example when you pulled into the RV park? If you did and the solenoid valve failed to close after you put the switch in the road position upon start up, the open valve was still holding the Norgren in the open position.

It could be other reasons as well.

FWIW to all, if my suspension system is not reacting properly, before I start tearing into the system to try to find the issue, I cycle the suspension controls through the various positions. Usually if there is a hang up of any valve or any other problem it tends to correct the problem. It will not cure leaky valves, but it often cures a part of the suspension that will not take a command.
