  • Brake light/tail light bulbs

Posted by Davy on November 16, 2012 at 3:33 pm

On my XL I have seven lights one each side in the back. Two amber on top for turn signal. Two red for tail lights. Two red for braker light and one clear for reverse light. Each one has two bulbs.

The turn signals and brake lights have 1156 bulbs. They are single contact and have two low posts. They tail lights take a 67 bulb that are also single contact and have two low posts.

The base is the same as far as I can see. Perhaps they are different wattage? Anybody know the reason for the difference?

Can I put in LED bulbs? Or will this cause problems that I do not know about?

    Thanks,

    DKO

Go to a web site called superbrightleds.com and look for there automotive bulb section. They will have a cross refrence chart showing you which bulbs to buy for each different bulb you have. Be sure for amber light buy the amber bulbs and red for red and so on. If you put white behind a red lense it will look pink and white behind an amber lense looks funny too. Every bulb on the outside of my coach has led bulbs with the exception of the side turn signal lights. The led bulbs for this application are not bright enough for use in the daylight.

Thanks. I did not know that about using the correct color bulbs on LEDs . All regular bulbs are clear now.

One of the bulb sites I looked at today warned that some vehicles needed the flasher changed when going to LEDs because of different power usage. Does that apply here?

I haven’t seen a test yet that says LED replacement bulbs are at least as bright as the regular bulbs. I already replaced my 3rd brake light with a LED fixture and alert pulsar. Not high on my list, but on my list, is to replace the same tail lights you have with LED fixtures. I don’t really want to use the oval fixtures typically found on trailers because of the look of oval lamps in a rectacular opening. The ones I really want to use are simply too expensive. They are Whelen lamps; the same used on most ambulances. Another one I’m considering is made by Peterson.

I have not had any problem with my bulbs. My coach is a 98 and all lights work great. I have seen the the same caution about the use of LED’s in some vehicles but am not really sure what they are talking of. The use of the correct color for red and yellow lenses is the white LEDs put off white light and changes the color of the lenses.
