  • Bouncing Speedometer

I am getting the coach ready for a 680 mile drive to West Palm

Beach for the Prevost Expo. I took the coach for a run yesterday and noticed that speed up to 40 the speedometer remains flat and true. At speeds above 40 she starts a gradual bouncing, and at cruise speed of 60-65 she bounces like someone on a pogo stick. Back and forth between cruise speed and 40 mph.

    Any recommended checks?

At one time I think Prevost had a bad speedometer and so many had problems they created a kit that had a more reliable speedometer and the new wiring harness to install it. Easy job and if I remember the two I replaced over the years (two different coaches) took about 1/2 total.

I remember the name “Engel” but cannot remember if that was the good one or bad one.

I will research the name. Thanks for the tip.

Remember I said I don’t know if Engel was the good one, bad one or even the right name. I’m getting like Tom with CRS,

On our bus, the signal to the speedo goes though a small controller in the steer bay that is used to drop the tag axle above 15 mph if you still have it up. When our speedometer stopped working, that’s where the problem ended up being. I even recorded the signal coming into the speedo with an analog recorder and it was getting pulses, but the failed tag controller must have been attenuating the signal enough that the speedo didn’t pick it up. Just something else to check. Our speedometer gauge is made by VDO and is programmable.
