    Hi All –

One of my engine bay door hinges had been damaged when the previous owner backed into something. The hinge had been welded back together, but was not quite right and made the door out of alignment. I decided to replace all of the hinges and have them chromed before installing them. I sent them to Adavanced Plating in Nashville and I have been real pleased with their customer service/communications. Today I received an e-mail from them advising that they had a problem with one of the hinges. I have copied below the e-mail I received along with two pictures.

    Brian,

We have run into a problem with one of your parts.

I need to know what they are off of, and how hard it would be to get a replacement.

One of the 4 hinge halves had some pitting that they were unhappy with, so they sent it back to get stripped.

They were under the assumption that it was aluminum, and when they stripped it, found out it was die-cast.

The mounting holes, and the hinge hole was enlarged, and the thickness of the mounting leg was reduced.

This was done so evenly and with no evidence of erosion, that it was not even noticed until it was matched against another of the pieces.

It almost looks that the piece was made with hole reducing inserts that were eaten out.

    Everything else is too smooth.

I will need to find out where we need to start looking for a replacement part.

See the attached pictures for clarity.

Any thoughts on how the metal would have been removed so smoothly?

By the way, I have already sent the information for ordering a new part and I am confident they will make it right.

I believe you can purchase chromed hinges from International Bus Parts.

International Bus Products is where I got the idea for the chromed hinges. They have them advertised on their website. When I called about them I was told they buy hinges from Prevost Parts and then have them chromed by a seperate vendor. I was told theyh were out of stock and would not a large order to make it cost effective to sell. I decided to order my own hinges and have them chromed. Here is the latest from Advanced Plating

    Brian,

The remainder of the hinge order is done.

I will have them go ahead and send all of them to you, including the bad one, leaving the ticket as is.

Use the bad hinge half to match to the correct replacement out of your spares.

Once you get them, send me the other set, plus one half to replace the bad one.

I’ll write a new ticket for 2 sets (4 halves), plus one half at no charge since it was paid for on the original ticket.

If you can decipher the cost to replace the part that was damaged, even though we will be using a spare one, I’ll also deduct it from the ticket.

Once I get them, I will expedite them through.

Again, I continue to be impressed with the customer service at Advanced Plating.

    Brian
