Black Water Tank Sensors
Posted by Tom on September 19, 2014 at 9:03 pmWell….my bad, first of all!!! I used some toilet paper that was “safe” for “holding tanks”….(therefore Holding tanks!!!!) anyway….my black water tank sensors stopped working and, in spite of massive treatements and prayer….stilll aren’t working. Any thoughts on how I can get my sensors working again??????

Your best bet is to add a signature with your conversion info and year so people with like coaches can help..

Sensors are and have been mostly a PITA. I have yet to have a coach in which I wasn’t doing something to restore the tank level display to working order. Having said that the answer to what it takes to get them reading accurately depends on the type of sensing system. If you have that information it would be helpful since there are not that many ways to measure tank contents so someone knows the specific answer. The good news is they are not tough to calibrate or repair.
Knowing holding tank sensors are the least reliable I have learned to not worry a lot if the sensors take a hike. I know the capacity of both tanks, my water and my holding tank, so rule number one is I only add water in an amount equal to my holding tank. 80% seems close enough for my coach. That way, even if I run the water tank dry, and have not dumped the holding tank I will not have a problem.
Rule number two is I never use city water pressure. I always fill my tank and pump from it. That is not only because it prevents a holding tank overflow, but my systems are set up to work very well with my pump, and the volume and pressure of city water varies so I am always sure my system will work as intended.
Rule number three is the key to success. Never add water to the water tank unless you also dump the holding tank. There are no exceptions to that rule. As long as I know the water tank contents I never have to worry about the holding tank. Having working sensors is nice, but not ever having to worry if they fail is even nicer.

Tom, you likely have a system of sensors that rely on air pressure on that year of Marathon. If you remove the silver laminated panel above your water pump (this will be the rear bay curb side). You will likely see 3 small air pumps. If you follow the small clear plastic tubes, you will see that they run through a one way check valve and then extend into the top of each holding tank. It is not unusual to have this tube in the black tank become clogged. Typically they can be unclogged by blowing compressed air down through the tube. If it has been clogged for along time or the tanks have been empty, and the debris has dryed out it may be necessary to put some cleaner down the tube. We typically use Simple Green, and keep filling the tube until it has softened the clog and then blow it out with air.

Thanks to you guys who answered my post. As soon as I get home, I will give these suggestions a real run. As much as I love this coach, I do find there are challenges on an ongoing basis….in other words, don’t leave those tools at home!!!!
Thanks again and I’m sure I’ll be back again…ty

I keep more tools in the coach than most folks have at home.
But since I’ve never met a tool I did not like, I’ve got even more at home.
Remember, if you are not working on your bus, then you are falling behind.

What about those of us that have our “people” take care of the bus?????
I’m not kidding about the following. In the early 90’s we were visiting Angola Coach and went out to dinner with another couple that were there. He was bragging, and completely serious that he would bring his coach back to Angola frequenty so they could clean it. He was talking about routine cleaning like vacuuming. The he starts telling us how proud he was because he changed a tire. Seems he noticed a wheel and tire pass him, and in a second or two he realized it had come off his Accord.
He was unable to retrieve the tire and wheel so he looked in the Accord owner’s manual to see how to jack the car up and change a tire. He did that with the spare, took a lug nut from each of the other wheels and limped to a tire dealer.
This guy was about 65 and he had never changed a tire in his life and he had no tools in his coach. None.

The guy who introduced me to Prevosts had no problem cleaning, washing, and detailing his bus … but would not do any maintenance or repair beyond fueling and checking fluids. We were at the Bulow Camp Ground near Flagler Beach, FLA for Speedweeks. Something didn’t work on the coach; satellite receiver I think. The Konigseders hadn’t arrived yet, or maybe that year they weren’t attending this racing oriented mini-ralley I guess you’d call it.
He pulled out of his pocket what the first pocket sized cell phone I’d ever seen, pushed some buttons, handed the phone to me, and said, “Bill will answer. Tell him what’s wrong, and he’ll walk you through fixing it.” And of course Bill Doherty answered the call, walked me through the problem, diagnosed the problem, had me fix it, made sure we didn’t have any other problems, and told me to call anytime.”
I guess some guys are more than happy to get in, turn the key, and just drive!

Steve…
When we got home from our trip, I finally got around to giving your suggestion a try. Bingo…I havn’t tested it extensively yet, but at first flush (maybe a poor choice of words!) it’s looking pretty good.Just as you suggested, I got to the tube and put a syringe full of cleaner down the section going into the tank.just a little air pressure and bingo…it was open!
It appears the monitor panel is registering properly, too.. Terrific suggestion..
Now, do you have one for the Black Tank Back Flush connection?
Thanks

Typically the problem with the flush is that the small holes get clogged on the sprayer. You can try filling an elevated line with LimeAway, CLR or a similar product, and let it set. Over time the small holes get filled with lime scale.

ON MY COUNTRY COACH I CAME UP WITH A PLAN I USE A 5 GAL BUCKET MIX PINE CLEANER WITH WATER POUR INTO TOILET CHASE IT THRU WITH 3 BUCKET FULLS AND ALL DONE AND WORKING WELL

Typically when I dump my black water tank and don’t flush the tank with the No Fuss Flush system the tank quantity indicating system will not indicate correctly. When I use the flush system it takes care of the problem. The flush spray nozzle is on the right side of the tank and washes down the left side of the tank where the sensors are located. It never fails that if I use the flush system the quantity indication system works normally and it also never fails that if I don’t, it doesn’t. My flush system nozzle clogged up at one point and during that time the quantity indicating system never worked properly. Cleaning the No Fuss Flush nozzle is covered in other posts.
A while back I traded in my old bus for a new one and I thought that with a new bus I could leave my tool box at home. Wrong! I had to get a bigger tool box. It was a bigger bus. Now that I have moved up to a Prevost, a bigger yet and better bus, I have increased the number and types of tools I carry. Pretty soon I may be leaving some underwear at home and using the drawer space for tool storage. How many carry not only a 1/2″, but also a 3/4″ drive impact wrench?
-
Yep,
Impact wrench, 3/4 drive socket set up to 2″ and X12 Torque
multiplier. Hope I never have to use them on the road, may have to have Bernie fly out and handle it for me.
