This August we will be making the drive to drop off my daughter for college at Samford University. Not only can I use a recommendation for a decent place to stay near Birmingham (because our search has been less than fruitful) but I want to stop someplace for a change of pace on the way up from Tampa. I was thinking about Biloxi, but am open to other places.

    Suggestions?

    Karl,

Hope you all are well. I cannot help with a parking spot in Birmingham, sorry. But Bottega is a great restaurant not to be missed.

My mother was from Biloxi, and I have spent a lot of time there. We love it, but I think most of that comes from my personal, and my family’s history there. The water is not great, and there is not too much to do outside of the casinos. If you do go, Mary Mahoneys is one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. Majestic Oaks is a clean friendly park if not a little crowded.

If you have never taken the bus to New Orleans and stayed at the French Quarter RV Resort, that would be the place. It is quite possibly the most fun city on earth (and I do not mean Bourbon St). Staying in the middle of the action at FQRV is like nothing else.

If you are looking for a laid back place and a really nice resort, Bella Terra in Orange Beach AL is nice.

We know a lot of kid who went to Samford, and it has been a great experience for them all. Good choice!

Thanks, John. That confirms what I thought, and maybe Biloxi isn’t the best place for a family vacation. I was hoping for something in Mississippi because I could add that state to my map, but perhaps there is another option?

You know it, Tom. I kinda hope someone will pull a rabbit out of a hat. I think that the place Natalie has picked out so far is an hour away, almost to Atlanta!

Talledaga race track? Do they offer camping when there isn’t a race? Worth a call to them to find out.

There is a campground at or near Auburn, since you mentioned the college being east of Brimingham, we’ve stayed there a couple time and although not the greatest, it worked. On the road so don’t have the Woodalls with me.

    Bonz:

Suggestion for a quiet place to hang out for a few days is Hollywood Casino Campground in Bay St. Louis, Ms. Another unique place to try is the Silver Slipper Casino near Waveland Ms – this one is right on the water. You will even get some spray if the wind is blowing – no trees – just you and the sea. Not much for kids other than the miles of beautiful beaches.

Also would recommend to anyone needing an overnight stop on I-75 between Atlanta and the Florida Line to try exit 82 Carrolls Country Sausage General Store and Campground, Ashburn, Ga… Its fairly new, clean easy in and out, 50 amp service, gravel drives, no cable super nice folks and you get a free great country breakfast for the 30 bucks a night camping fee. The breakfast would cost you 10 bucks a head at Cracker Barrell. Plus the general store has 42 feet of fresh meat counter. All kinds of great looking beef and pork to choose from. Everything we bought has been excellent. Need more sausage!!!

We will be staying at Hollywood Casino Campground in Bay St. Louis, Ms. starting this Sunday 11 May. Will be there for 4 weeks while we deal with family issues in New Orleans. Will post next week how things are at the campground.

    Karl,

We have stayed at Lakeside Landing Marina & RV Resort on our trips to Virginia. It is located outside of Pell City, Alalbama. It is about 5 – 8 miles off of Interstate. We have been there in 42 foot Class A’s. They have pull throughs and full hook ups. Sites are either gravel or grass.

We always stay at the city park in Hoover. It is beside the Baseball stadium once named Regions Stadium, I think it may have been renamed. It is basically a large parking lot with full hook up 50 amp service. Easy in and out and not to far from Stamford in a nice residential area.

I have stayed at this place about 10 years ago under another name:

    BIRMINGHAM SOUTH CAMPGROUND (PELHAM): With paved streets, sites and patios – #52 thru 55 and B7 approach 70 feet while 44, 45 & 46 are 60 footers (B7 and 53 have some slope in front). With gravel streets, sites and paved patios – #28 – 75 feet, #27 – 70 feet, #23, 29, 30 & 31 in the 65 foot range while #11, 19, 20 & 21 are 60 footers. FF: #B7, 28, 29, 30, 31, 54 & 55.

Directions: On I-65, Exit #242 and head west ½ mile to the light at Hwy 33N. Take a right and the park will be down a few hundred yards on the right.

    Address: 222 Hwy 33, 35124

    Phone: 205-664-8832 Reservations 800-772-8832

The Hoover Met is also a good place but just a big paved parking lot with hookups.

Hope this helps you a little.

Thanks, all. We are heading out to dinner, but I will start researching these places tomorrow. If you have any other suggestions, I sure appreciate it!

In case you were wondering, it looks like a week at Bella Terra, 4-5 days at River Country Campground in Gadsden, AL, and then Birmingham South Campground in Pelham, AL for the time we are dropping Ariel at Samford.

Thank you for the input and your help.
