Kohlar tech their today……. excessive smoke cause from defective turbo. Ordered to be installed Tuesday.

For the amount of smoke the generator produced ….. we’ll have to run for a reasonable amount of time to clear the exhaust. I’ll post success tomorrow.

Thanks Steve, I’ll also run this by the tech and ask him to assure the breather system is clear.

Maybe…………..The color of the smoke is a clue to what might be wrong. If it is black when under load I would agree there might not be enough turbo boost. Before I got a new turbo I would put a gauge on it to see if the amount of boost is correct.

Load the generator with all the AC units, plus any other heavy loads and measure boost. Also see if the smoke is present, what color, and if the genset lugs as AC units cycle on and off.

Check and see if it has a catalytic converter, on one of my Liberty’s had one and it made my kohler smoke black and trashed the turbo. Troy said to cut it off, all was well

The turbo is a no show as it missed the deadline for overnight ship. Looking to install Wed morning now.

Here is a picture of this miniature turbo as compared with the large size Detroit S-60 turbo.

Turbo is the silver piece with two black hoses attached. About the size of a grapefruit.

I’ve been told part is high dollar.

Too bad they missed shipping deadline. I bet you want to get back on the road! I have a Kohler 20EORD in mine and I get just a little smoke out of it…nothing too bad at all. Hope that new turbo cures your smoking issue.

Yes, loaded it up and it didn’t take more then15 minutes to fog the parking lot. You know sometimes the techs are just a little ….Not listening to Marathon techs.

So the gen tech is standing out side talking on the phone behind the bus. Generator starts and just a little more puff then normal out the tail pipe. Didn’t take long for the exhaust pipe to heat up and then came the good stuff which managed to smoke the parking lot. As the wind was blowing smoke started blowing into the shop. That was enough for the gen tech to agree with “I think you have a bad turbo”. Tech also removed the out bound hose finding the inside oil soaked.

Got my fingers crossed the new turbo shows up Wed. morning.

Make’s sense on the turbo, I think you’ll get out of there soon.

Sounds more like a turbo seal than a turbo that has worn out. Isn’t that repairable?
