  • Behind the Gen Radiator-NOT GOOD

Posted by DON on September 1, 2015 at 10:07 pm

I decided to remove the generator radiator and take it in to a radiator shop for a good goin over. Here is what I found behind the radiator. Notice the belt. If that belt breaks the genny would get hot and shut down. That would be a bummer. Like the generator compartment, the heat/sound barrier material in this compartment is falling apart.

You don’t need to pull the Rad to get to that belt there is a panel you can remove it should be checked inline with how much you use the gen or on time it is often over looked , I change mine when I change the fan belt on the gen , I put a new one on every year , Other conversions have electric motors for the rad and no belt, Libertys have the motor with a belt behind the Rad

I’m replacing the generator upper and lower radiator hoses. I found a Dayco part# that will work, #71011.

    Don,

Give serious consideration to all the hoses associated with the Webasto if you haven’t already. For some of the short odd 90 degree bends I went to a local parts store with the pieces I took out and just bought longer sections and cut what I needed out of them.

I believe on your vintage Liberty you have a pair of copper pipes going forward on the driver’s side frm the engine area. They each go through about 6″ of flexible hose just below the coach floor at the bulkhead in front of the drive axle. They may look good but change them. They are out of sight, out of mind and if you are on the road and cannot get at them if they fail you may have a problem. They can be shut off at the valve near the engine and I believe the valves in the vater bay going to the heat exchanger and the HW tank. I made it a practice to change them when I changed coolant so I did not have to drain anything just to change them.

Installed a new fan belt, NAPA #A39. The old one was probably the original.

I’m don’t have to remove the fan and motor assembly to replace the sound/heat barrier material.

Belt can be changed/adjusted by removing this panel in the inverter bay

Below pic shows the belt tensioner

I’ll start installing the new sound/heat barrier material soon. Pics to follow of course.

Since Jon and Tom are absolutely adament there are NO stupid questions on this forum, does that huge fan and motor provide air to cool the generator radiator?

It’s a Liberty Coach. I would have been surprised and very disappointed at anything less.

I have no way of knowing if the Liberty generator radiator fan is overkill or not, but it works. I cannot recall ever seeing a generator temp in excess of 180 on any of my coaches regardless of the load on the generator or the outside temps.

Our generator water temps is usually about 170, but I haven’t had really, really high outside air temps yet (like over 100). At 170 I was concerned the termostat was wide open, but was told this is fine.

I have seen 210 degrees on my generator,it is rare but it has happened,my thermostat seems to be 180.I have a analog thermometer at the top of the radiator and it has a indicator that will show the peak temperature, usually it is 185 on most days.

My gen never goes over 180, usually runs at 170.

I need to do some touchup then button it up.
