  • Bedroom emergency exit window

Posted by Chuck on September 3, 2017 at 2:39 pm

My orginal post is not showing so I will ask again.

When attempting to open the window we failed to unlock it and as it tried to open the motor or something popped.

Do we try to release the pressure of the attempt and try again? Any suggestions?

We have 2001 Liberty XL II, the following applies if yours is same as ours, which I can not verify.

We had several window problems on our recent trip. Some may have been self inflicted. The mechanism that electrically opens the window appears to be somewhat “flimsy” from outward observation, I have not had time to tear one apart. I think something happens in the follower nut that moves on the shaft that the little motor drives. Then the nut does not move and the window does not swing out even though the motor still runs and makes its little grating noise.

What I did when this happened was remove the screen – lift up and pull out on the bottom and the screen will come out if you lower it a little and it comes out of the top channel – and opened the window manually. Use the other hand to move the supporting link at the side of the window and the window will stay open. One warning, do not remove the screen at night after the inside lights have been on for a while. 6,217 little green bugs will be on the outside of the screen and when you swing it into the coach, they will all fly off and head for the nearest light. Don’t ask how I know this.

Regarding not releasing the window catch, the catch mechanism on one of ours went “over center” while trying to get one of them open or closed, I don’t remember which. What happens is there is a small “dog” that reaches out of the release latch and travels between two rollers on the slide at the bottom of the window that actully latches the window closed. When you pull on the latch, the lever, dog, and rollers translate the rotary motion to fore and aft linear movement of the slide. Can happen if you pull the release catch out too far. I somehow did this and it ended up with the dog no longer between the rollers. Bad thing about this is will let you latch the window locked shut, but not open it. Fixing it requires removing the screen, getting the window open, which in our case required making a small tool with a hook on the end out of a piece of 1/8″ wire that I used to reach down and hook on the slider mechanism and pull it forward releasing the window, giving access to manipulate the slide by hand and get the catch dog back between the rollers. Has to be thin enough to get between the locked closed window and the window frame. A picture would really help, but bus is in storage.

    Hope this helps.
