Sid, look at the road master quick disconnect, I use it on my 2015 GMC Canyon, it also requires you to disconnect the negative terminal. It takes about 20 minutes to install and works great. There is a how to video on E-Trailer.com that shows the install.

Eliminate the inconvenience and danger of pulling your battery cable. Just connect it and forget it — after the initial installation, the vehicle can be towed and then driven without any further adjustment to the battery — ever!

It’s ideal for anyone towing a vehicle which must be towed with the battery cable disconnected. It provides a positive current source for brakeaway systems or other accessories which must be connected to the battery.

Note: the 766 is not for use with diesel engine vehicles. A gasoline engine will typically surge less than 100 amps during starting. Due to the very high compression ratio of diesels, they can surge up to ten times that amount, causing the solenoid to fail.

    Features of the 766:
    • activates with a remote switch, usually located inside the towed vehicle’s passenger compartment
    • works on virtually all 12-volt batteries

I have a 2014 suburban and I bought a knife switch at tractor supply in the automotive dept. for about $150. I mounted it on top of battery negative cable. Real simple and safe. Granted it’s not automatic, you do have to open and close the hood to use it but its reasonable and effective.

On our 2015 tahoe, reason for disconnecting battery cable was after you neutraled the transfer case and with steering unlocked was so that steering would stat unlocked. there was a discussion some time back under towing, and what we do is pull fuse for steering lock/unlock fuse # 38 as I rember on our tahoe, this fuse # should be shown in your owners manual, then steering stays unlocked and you don’t have to disconnect battery cable. solved a big PIA
