  • Battery Disconnect Relay

    While having the inverter fans replaced at Inverter Services, the technician remarked that the domestic battery disconnect relay was hot. Is it normal for this relay to be hot (not warm) to the touch? The relay is an Eaton 6041 H 105 and seems to work fine. Has anyone had one of these relays fail?

    A preliminary search of the internet shows that the relay is no longer in production by Eaton. Country Coach has not been helpful. I did determine that Mooney aircraft used this relay in the 201 series. I hate to pay airplane part prices!.

    I’m a little surprised that Inverter Services couldn’t help you out by recommending an appropriate relay.

    It sounds as if you have a couple of options. First, find out if a continuous duty relay should be hot. Be precise on what defines hot by taking the temp with an IR gun. It may actually be OK.

    Assuming it needs to be replaced I would guess there is a suitable replacement. It might not be the identical relay, but relays have become almost generic so all you need is one rated for the load, duty cycle, correct voltage, etc. A good electric supply house should be able to suggest an alternative if you provide the information or the actual relay.

    You can still by those relays. They are pricey because they were mainly used in the aircraft business.

    Yes, they are hot to the touch.

    I have had my coach 9 years and it has always been hot but never failed.

    It is a continuous relay.

    So hot you almost can’t touch it.

    I’m not familiar with your specific relay, but some of these large relays/solinoids are field repairable. The usual cause of excessive heat is a high resistance connection which is often just simply dirty. Disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the relay may solve the problem.
