  • BATTERY BALENCE WARNING LIGHT

Posted by BILL on November 16, 2016 at 7:55 pm

I STARTED GETTING BATTERY BALENCE WARNING LIGHT ON MY LAST TRIP.

    IN SEPT 2016.

THE COACH IS 1997 XLV MARATHON. THE BATTERIES ARE 3 YEARS OLD, THE INVERTERS ARE ORIGONAL .

I INSTALLED 3 NEW 15,000 BTU ROOF AIRS ( ONE IN BEADROOM, TWO IN FRONT) IN 2015, REPLACING 2 ORINGINAL RVAC BASEMENT UNITS.

THE 2 ROOF AC’S IN FRONT, ARE EACH POWERED BY ONE RVAC POWER CIRCUIT (TWO 110 VOLT/20 AMP CIRCUITS) USED FOR THE 2 COMPRESSORS ON THE OLD RVAC UNIT.

THE BALENCE WARNING STARTED AFTER RUNNING THE ONE ROOF AIR ON INVERTER WHILE DRIVING FOR 3-4 HOURS. I STARTED THE GENERATOR TO POWER THE AC BUT THE WARNING LIGHT HAS STAYED ON REGARDLESS OF GENERATOR SOURCE. WE HAVE BEEN ON SHORE POWER FOR 2-3 DAYS AT A TIME BUT THE “BATTERY BALENCE” LIGHT IS STILL COMES ON WHILE DRIVING.

    ANY IDEAS?

    THANKS

Measure the voltage at the 12 and 24 volt side of the chassis equalizer, it should be within .5 volt. In other words, if the 12 volt side reads 13 volts, double the voltage (26) and compare to the 24 volt side. If it’s within 1/2 volt, 26.5 or 25.5, your equalizer is good and your problem may be the Monitor, a common problem. I’m assuming your 24 volt alternator and regulator are good.

As a rule of thumb, any time there is a warning light for an electrical issue, look at the gauges to see if there is an issue. Not all gauges are complete or able to assist in verifying the electrical condition so the next step is to measure voltages at the easiest point. Typically the terminals at the base of the equalizer are the easiest place.

If the voltages are within range the problem can be the Vanner monitor. If they are out of range, high, low or imbalanced steps have to be taken to corect the problem.

What is not clear in the first post is if the imbalance is related to the house or chassis. The poster has a Marathon and is running an AC on inverter. If the house is a 12/24, and Marathon provided a monitor for house DC voltages the issue may be on the house as opposed to the chassis. Marathon experts need to jump in here.

I don’t believe the Marathon house side will light the balance dash light. On my Marathon, the house 12/24 voltages are displayed by the Techlink.

Bill – You are talking about the dash light, correct?

I know your not talking about a Vantare, but for those of us who have one, Vantare has a Battery Balance light for Chassis batteries, and another Balance light for House batteries.

I had the same problem a few months ago, and it was as Jon and Tom suggested, the Monitor was bad.

    Tom,

Yes the warning light is on the dash. I do not have Tech Link.
