It would help if you added information in the signature line telling us about your type conversion.

Usually when the fan is turned on the cover opens automatically.

Older model fantastic fans are know to stick and not open. Mine do that after being closed a while. You may have get on the roof and help the motor to open the cover.

Ditto what Joe said, once the lid is open, assuming it was stuck, put some Silicone on the seal so the lid will open and close freely. The way it works, is once the motor lifts the lid, there is a small switch under the lid that makes contact and turns the fan motor on. That switch also needs some Silicone.

that year of fan should have a know that you pull on and turn to open the fan manually. Most of the time as told to me by Fantastic is a poor ground. So once it is open clean the ground wire to the switch.
