  • bad smell

Posted by Dennis on August 18, 2019 at 10:32 pm

I have Bruce 2001 coach. Had it home cleaning and went to dinner and closed it up. Upon returning there was a terrible smell inside and was kind of smoky. Everyting was off. Not plugged in, inverters off and gen set off. I opened up the door by driver seat and saw oil from hyodrolic system had leaked all over the floor and it had the bad smell. I am at a loss as to what could have cause what ever the issue is becasue everything was off. I saw no smoke when I open the door but it is clearly the same smell. I dont know if it is low as I dont know how to check it. It would not have been pumping since everything was off. I live in Silicon Valley Ca. Does anyone know of a shop who is competient on Prevost coachs? I also have issue with electricl. I dont know if it is inverter issue or possible it has a RTI system for turning on light, ac. ect. Non of which now work. I have on going issue with only 20 amp service in my storage spot as storage here is very hard to come by. As such I turn everything off when stored. I seem to have issue almost every time I power everythinng back up. When in use on the road or in campground I have no issues. Help !!

To mention inverters and hydraulic oil in the same paragraph is confusing because they don’t seem to have anything related to one another.

If the leak is in the steer compartment the only hydraulic system I can think of in the entire coach is power steering and that makes no sense because the bus wasn’t running.

Is it possible the power steering was leaking at a hose or fitting and that it has nothing to do with the real problem, and is it also possible the real issue is electrical in nature? How often do you check power steering fluid levels and how often do you open the side door next to the driver? That will help understand if the hydraulic leak is a long time thing or if it just happened.

Electrical smoke has a distinctive smell and there is a huge difference between electrical smoke and the odor of power steering fluid which is almost odorless.

Is it a slide coach and if so, may have an HWH slide that is controlled by hydraulics.

Same questions. The coach wasn’t running so that means the slide wasn’t being operated which means the smoke and hydraulics are unlikely to be related.

Sorry for confusion. The oil is dripping from what look like a filter of some kind. The lines go to a hydrolic tank that is for slide and interior door ect. It may have just built up and just started smelling. The part I dont get is the smoke. Maybe it leaked onto something and it burned the oil. In anycase, I cleaned it all up and put a container upder it to catch any future oil. It looks like the nipple that the oil is coming out of is made to have a tube attached to it. Should I be putting atube on it and if so where would I run the tube. There is another fitting on what looks like the pump that has a tube on it and the previous owner siad it use to drip on the ground but he didnt like that and so he put a little catch bottle in there and ran tube inside it so oil did not drip on ground.

Wazoo, you have us at a distinct disadvantage because there are very few owners of your type conversion so for us to have general knowledge of what you are discussing, much less specific knowledge is not likely.

Pictures would help, close up and general pictures, but again, even with photos you are our eyes, nose and ears so my first question remains about how inverters and hydraulics can even share the same discussion because I cannot see how the two have any relationship.

As to service, if it is related to a non-Prevost slide is is likely Prevost is not even going to get involved, and if it is related to converters Prevost is definitely not getting involved.

Conventional RV dealers and repair places are going to be in well over their head, although they are adept at vacuuming out wallets for on the job training I would urge you contact the converter or find out from the seller where to get service.

Upon further investigation it’s not hydraulic it’s the air compressor system. I had it serviced a short time ago at an RV service center. Not sure if it’s connected but I never had that problem before. Not sure why it would take a few months to show up but maybe it had to leak enough oil to make contact with something that caused the smoke and the smell. The oil is coming from the blue filter in The picture. I guess maybe my best choice is to take Coach up to Eugene Oregon to marathon.

That is a Junn-Aire compressor. It needs oil added to it on occasion. The sight glass at the bottom should be half full.

If you have a bad air leak that compressor will run until it overheats and burns out. I know that from 1st hand experience. If the filter is full of oil, I would suspect that the compressor pumped all of it’s oil out then burned up. That is why you smelled something funny.

Any way that is my best guess.
