  • Backup Camera System

Posted by Ronald on April 8, 2019 at 6:13 pm

We have a Voyager system and the right, passenger side camera may have gone bad. No video. Just a whitish and blurry screen. Still trying to figure out if it is the camera or the wiring.

The system is old from about 2007. Might as well call it antique.

The quality of the video is poor and I am assuming this is due to being old, analog technology.

I am assuming it would be easiest to replace our system with another Voyager. That is assuming that the cabling has not changed and this would be a simple swap.

    1. Did you „upgrade“ your system and what did you get?

    Cheers,

    Ronald

I just took a chance on this Amazon $2000 beauty. I’m not a fan of moving parts so I stayed away from rotating rear cameras. I put 2 cameras in the back one pointed at the hitch, one down the road. The 2 side cameras are additions I did not previously have.

This is a 4 wire system if you have a 4 wire cable in place it can likely be used. There are also 4 wire to rca video adapters that can be used for other camera types. It all comes down to a video signal, ground, 12V, and ground. Depending on what wiring harness you have in place may play a role in your decision.

i have used this system for all of one trip of 450 miles but the signal was stable and picture quality was good. Have not used it at night yet to test the IR features. Will be interesting to see what the longevity of this system is. It did have better reviews than a lot of the name brands out there.

RVCAMS.com likely has the solution to any issue you are having. They were able to get me the camera and monitor that would work with the existing wiring in my ’88 coach. They sent all the instructions and when I could not get it working as they say it should have I made 1 call, talked to the tech, fixed the problem and I now have full color, audio, night vision back up using the existing wiring.

These guys are the best and really know their $hip, stuff, crap, whatever, you know what I am talking about!

My back up camera picture kept getting more and more blurry over time. I thought the camera was failing and I’d need a replacement. But, on closer inspection, I removed the lens cover suspecting a water leak. Sure enough there was a gap in the top of the lens cover and over time dirty water leaked onto the camera lens and ‘crudded’ it up. After some careful buffing and polishing of the camera lens and cover and new caulk it’s nearly as good as new.

I will be working on this some more and hope to find the problem and be able to fix it. Of course, given the age, these side cameras are no longer being sold. Although, I found 2 on eBay at $300 each, ONLY. Great incentive to find and fix the problem. … 🙂

If it is electronic, by the time it is installed on a coach it is no longer produced and if it lasts a month before it quits, it is no longer supported.

And those electronic devices are going to be a part of the self driving cars and trucks.
