Back-up Generator
Hello,
I am in the process of having built a new H3-45 for the Entertainer Lease Coach Industry and am going to put 2 generators in it,To have a back-up in case something happens to the one. Does anyone have any ideal how I could have it fixed to where if the first generator shuts down the second generator starts and everything switches over to run off that one? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Robert may I ask why do you want a back-up? I dont believe even the entertainer busses have them. I sure would hate to give up a bay for a generator. Just my opinion.

I’am sure the tech knowledge is available.for dual generator switch over. Big boats are pretty common with back up generators.
Without major loads during the night it made sense having a lower KW. I don’t see many buses looking around at late models.. listing 2 generators
Just asking, is that a common request from a leasee ?

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replys, There are,used to be a couple of companys that put 2 Generators on there conversions.I think the main reason they did it was because they didnt run bus air,So they wanted the back-up generator in case the main one went down for air conditioning purposes. I am in the planning stages and though my shell will have full over the road air,I am just thinking I want a back-up generator for just in case.That may get changed when we get down to it,But I am just trying to build a fail proof coach and the generator is one of the things that has caused me problems over the last 28 years. I know it takes up a lot of bay space,adds weight and cost,But if it is there just the one time I need it that something has happened to the main generator it will be worth it for me.

Sure your guys are on top of it ; The new inverter style gen sets are smaller in size and are much more dependable plus easier to stack for back up.. Fwiw. I have even went to Inverter 48 V dc in my Ac /heat system and cut amp load by 2/3rds… But ck out the possibility of the differant Gen sets on the market now. Just food for thought.
Still supply standard 120/220 60 hz supply to coach.

I produced a large event in CA several years ago and needed portable power so we rented a massive trailer based duel generator system.. I think they were each 100 or 150 KW… they were synced and both running during shows and when/if we lost one there was no interuption whatersoever… so it’s definately possible not sure it exists for a RV applicaiton but it might be worth talking to someone that works with show power at a company Like Kohler or Cat… I can try to dig up the folks in CA that we worked with if that would help.

I am going to follow up with my converter and check in to the Marine world and see if anything exist that will work for a coach. Thanks for the help.

For back up generator auto-start I would keep it simple. I would set the primary generator to start at a higher voltage than the secondary. As a simpler alternative keep one generator a manual start, and the backup an auto-start. The transfer switch just has to be set up so if both are running only one is supplying power to the house.
That coach is getting heavier and heavier. There will be no sense in planning on shore power because with 7 AC units 50 amps will not be anywhere near adequate, and to make the coach work as you envision I’m thinking you are going to need a number of batteries.
The maintenance on the coach is also getting to be substantial.
