  • Awning whirley-gig thingy.

Posted by Tom on September 11, 2017 at 5:03 pm

So, after going through two genuine store-bought Girard anemometer propellers in two weeks, I decided to try a cheaper route to the next replacement. I ordered a “Davis Wind Cup” from Amazon for $18. I drilled a small hole for the tiny drive shaft and tightened the set screw…reassembled the whole thing.

Problem was….it was made to revolve the opposite direction than the original Girard…After looking at the device, it looked like it might work spinning either direction. Eureka, it did….I’ve got the fix, now! Course it’d be cheaper if I’d stay away from the trees…

    BTom,

I replaced mine a couple months ago. Still there, but I’m avoiding the trees like the plague!

Every time you pull into one of those big rig friendly campgrounds that advertise shade, you’ll now be looking for those low limbs that I guarantee you’ll find, unless you just go with the flow and allow the branches to destroy your whirly thingy. That’s the beauty of the PC map, hopefully a member before you has been there and didn’t drag limbs across their roof. I see people do it all the time with a mindset of it won’t hurt anything. Wrong….

I have 2 new whirly thingy’s in stock just in case I screw up. The older ones with the cups are getting hard to find.

All it took was an overnight at Grand Lake to make my wind scoops disappear. I replaced them with the vibration sensors and so far, so good. Yeah, staying away from branches helps too!

    Andy,

Did you get the vibration sensors from Marathon? Is it a simple upgrade? Or a “change the brain” type upgrade? Mine keep breaking and I’ve spent a bit on those annoying meters. Ha! Look at that spell check!

Our Zip Dee awnings also use the vibration detection sensors. They are located just under the lip of the awning cover on each awning.

They do use batteries so I have to remember to replace those occasionally.
