  • Aux Tank air bleed

    I have been messing with my aux system and this morning I pumped my aux air system up to full PSI with the bus off in approx. 85 degree weather. I lost about 1 PSI per 4 minutes or about 15 PSI/hr.

    The gap between cut-in and cut-out is 40 PSI so it kicks on about every 2.2 hours to fill back up to full.

    Does this sound reasonable to the rest of the leak chasers out there or are we bleeding aux air too quickly?

    That’s a little more than most will tolerate and if iut reaches that leak rate most of us would start chasing leaks.

    A lot of us, me included, are happy with the compressor running once or twice a day. It is possible to get leak free. To accomplish that however a person has to have plenty of time and patience.

    I got my previous two coaches leak free once. But that is only a moment to savor because as our coaches age leaks just start to occur, most of which originate from the push in fittings now commonly used instead of the compression fittings used at one time.

    One thing you can be sure of…….if you choose to turn your coach over to a technician and expect him to find and repair your leaks, you will need very deep pockets and an almost endless supply of money.

    Chris, you have a major leak somewhere in the AUX system. With some soapy water check some of the drain valves and easy to get at fittings.

    With the age of your coach I would also replace the check valve on your Aux compressor. Over the years with many members chasing air AUX leaks this valve should be replaced every two (2) years. Heat and water is the enemy.

    Regulators are another leaker fairly common with age. Important to replace with the same regulator as there are some used in heat areas which bleed off psi as heat increases.

    Check valves available through W.W. Grainger for around $100.

    Chris the last coach I had was leak free aux air would hold for months and the prime and secondary for months also I changed every fitting to comp fittings and a lot of parts it is possible to get done, keep working on it

    The amount of effort required to create a “leak free” coach is going to vary depending on age, type of coach (slides, no slides), and the conversion.

    The more push in fitting, the older the coach, the greater number of air operated devices, etc. all determine the complexity of the pneumatic system and how difficult or easy it is going to be to eliminate leaks. There is no single answer because all coaches are different. What appears somewhat consistent however is that there are certain things that always seem to show up as problems such as the check valves and regulators listed above.

    Before anyone should jump into a leak repair project it helps immensely if a person has a basic understanding of how the coach pneumatic systems are set up so you are able to focus on the area of leaks. Chase the big leaks first. If the leaks got worse fast, then it is likely the culprit is going to be easy to detect and the leak rate will slow down quickly one the big leak is found.

    Unfortunately as coaches age they become afflicted with many smaller leaks that take a lot of time to isolate and repair. As Peter stated it is possible to get a coach leak free. But it is an ongoing process to keep one leak free.

    I definitely am not looking for a leak free system. That is like finding a leprechan riding a unicorn.

    I have fixed a few leaks that slowed it down (driver’s seat). I will start the process on the above mentioned components. I am fairly certain the valve on the tank is one of my culprits.

    That is too much right there. Awesome stuff. Now if finding a leak was only that easy.
