  • Aux Compressor Stalling

    The Gast auxiliary air compressor is stalling the motor when it attempts to restart with head pressure of 40 psi or more in the aux system. This is on a 1998 Liberty Prevost 45XL. The electrical switch to activate the compressor is a typical well pump control switch. No head pressure relief mechanism. The compressor output feeds into a small Watts filter, a Versa valve then the well pump switch. All in the steering compartment. Thinking the compressor no start on the 2nd cycle was due to excessive head pressure I disassembled the filter and Versa vale. The Versa valve is not making a good seal which leaks air back to the compressor. The filter is full of corrosion and the bleeder is plugged.

    I am guessing the leaking Versa valve is causing the high head pressure. Further the filter drain should be cracked open slightly to bleed off compressor head pressure after the air pump shuts off. Does this sound correct? If I replace the filter and Versa valve the pump should start and cycle with 70-80 psi remaining in the tank?

    I will be polite and say the small water trap / purge device installed on a Liberty is less than ideal.

    I think as your coach is set up the solenoid valve is functioning as a check valve and the water trap is to open at the end of the cycle to purge the accumulated moisture. If the trap is plugged the pressure remains in the air line between the solenoid valve and the compressor and that could be the head pressure issue you are dealing with.

    I will not go into details here about how I changed my system but suffice it to say I got rid of the water trap /purge device and the solenoid valve and replaced them with a larger Norgren water trap that I drain manually and a check valve to prevent pressure to back flow to the compressor. I also reduced my aux system compressor to a 40 PSI cut in and 80 PSI cut out.
