Automatic Slack Adjusters
Posted by Art on April 23, 2020 at 9:27 amI’ve rebuilt all 4 Meritor/Rockwell 1560 ADB calipers, And replaced pads, Is there any reason to replace the automatic slack adjusters? Do they wear out? What is correct part# for my slack adjusters?

Call Meritor first, then call PrevostCar, and see what they say.
The online parts manual doesn’t list a part#? It list 2 dfifferent brands. Haldex & Rockwell(Meritor).

Art: While you have all that stuff apart, take the opportunity to polish the slack adjusters. The coach will ride better.

They can wear out or fail, like anything mechanical. If they are working I would not mess with them.
If you want to verfiy they are working manually back off the slack adjusters, and alternately apply and release air to the service brakes. You should see the adjusters start to tighten up the play until is is within an acceptable range.
A good reference is to back the slack adjusters off until with brake application you see the red band around the brake chamber push rod. Then the repeated brake application should tighten things up until your travel is within the specified range for the size brake chamber and the red ring is no longer visible when brakes are applied.

Jon! they seem to work ok, is it the plunger that is pushed down that controls the ratchet? also the rubber booties are not in good shape, can you buy new rubber?

Art, I have no idea if new rubber caps are available, but they are valuable because they keep water and crud from the ratchet assembly. Would Meritor have them available?
