  • AquaHot Burner Not Working

Posted by Mike on November 7, 2015 at 10:14 pm

The burner in our AquaHot stopped working. The burner does nothing, as if it has no power. The rest of the AquaHot hot works as in all the heating zones and pumps. The AquaHot controller shows no alarms and appears normal. I can’t find any blown fuses or tripped breakers.

The AquaHot model is AHE-100 03S. Some Royales use a similar model. Any ideas?

Presently on the way from western Nebraska to DFW.

    Thanks!

    Morning Mike,

Get your VOM meter, remove any cover over the burner area of the AH heater, be able to see the electronic control board and call me. I bet we can sort it out.

    Hi,

On a Royale the control board for the Aquahot is on the passenget side in the bay where the aqua hot is. Locate the control box for the aquahot, it has status lights on it about 7 x 10 stainless steel box. There is a reset button on it. It takes a paperclip, etc to go thru the hole and push the reset button in. Try that and let us know for more steps.

The electric heat works, just no diesel burner.

Rudy, thanks for the offer. I’ll call when I get to DFW…

Can you tell me what lights are illuminated on the electronic control panel? It could be just a reset of the low voltage light to get the burner going again.

Rudy is the “go to guy” for AquaHot & Webasto IMO. If it has anything to do with AquaHot or Webasto – he’s got a handle on it. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with him & his wonderful wife Carolyn the last several days after he did a fall tuneup on our Webasto heat exchanger unit. Rudy was able to provide some really interesting historical info about the Space Program, as well as showing us some super excellent places to eat in the area, too!! Thanks again Rudy.

First – Mike called and we diagnosed his problem as a motor with a bad spot which is why it would not start. Got him going on a temp basis till a new motor arrives and is installed.

Second – Had a grand visit with Mike and Karen. So much so I miss them now that they are gone. Thanks for the kind comments Mike.

Hope to get to see the first Mike when he is at the company office nearby me in the future. I certainly enjoy visiting with the folks that stop by for a day or so.

    How did you diagnosis that?

How did you get him going? Spin the motor shaft to a good spot

    Thanks Rudy!

It was great talking with you, and the hot water is greatly appreciated.

With Rudy on the phone, we checked voltages on the controller at the burner. As I’m telling Rudy the voltages, he tells me to smack the end of the motor. I did and it started up.

The motor is DC and appears to have a bad segment on the commutator or armature, i.e, a bad spot. The motor will work as long as it doesn’t stop on the bad spot. Smacking the end of the motor provides enough movement of the armature to energize the next segment and it starts.

Rudy is sending me a replacement motor and a replacement nozzle.

Too bad that all of life’s problems can’t be solved with a smack or swift kick.

I also had a stuck motor on the Royale I had and did the same thing, a tap to the motor and all was well. You have to run them, worse thing you can do is not cycle once a month as Rudy has pointed out.

The AquaHot is fixed! Thank You God and Thank you Rudy! Rudy is truly The AquaHot Man, and a great person too.

Rudy talked me though replacing the motor and checking out the bearings and pump. I reassembled and reinstalled the burner only to find out that it wouldn’t fire. With Rudy back on the phone we checked this, that, and the other thing, and found the flame detector wasn’t working. Cleaning the flame detector solved the problem.

Somewhere in the mix I cracked the plastic boiler drain line. Tomorrow I’ll follow Rudy’s advice and replace the plastic drain with a brass and hose drain.

Thanks to Rudy I now know more about an AquaHot than I ever wanted to know. Hopefully my knees and back will recover in a few days… The older and more decrepit I become, the easier it is to write the check for someone else to perform the work.

    Thanks Rudy!
