Don, If you have a water trap, and drain it routinely what is the purpose of the filter? Is it more likely to wring humidity from the compressed air, as opposed to condensate collecting in the trap?

The last sentence of the first paragraph of the installation instructions that I provided states: “A self-flushing water trap should also be installed before the filter to extend filter life and capture the bulk of water coming down line from the compressor.”

So the selling point is to put a belt on with your suspenders.
Their presumption is that in-line traps don’t capture all water and that is why you need a filter.

There are a lot of reasons why the filter might be a good idea. Some water traps suck. They are either unreliable or they just do not trap all moisture, so in that respect adding the filter is certainly justified.
I agree it is adding complexity and a good trap, combined with sufficient air hose length prior to the trap to assure water vapor will condense will likely eliminate the need for secondary moisture retention.
On all my Liberty coaches the aux compressor fed air to the Prevost accessory tank so if I ever had any concerns they were quickly answered by my routine tank draining. Since I never have gotten a drop of moisture from my accessory tank my modified aux compressor moisture trap system is all I need.
In anticipation of the question, I removed the “spitter” installed by Liberty, and instead routed aux compressor air through a Norgren water trap that is likely to only receive condensate and not vapor because it goes through a copper coil of tube, followed by 15 or 20 feet of plastic air line prior to the trap. The key is making sure the compressed air has cooled.

We spend almost zero time on shore power. We operate the aux compressor anytime the generator is running. I have adjusted it to come on at 50 psi and shut off at 70 psi. Currently the aux system leak rate is about 10 psi/hr. It was a lot worse when we bought it 6 yrs ago. Someday I’ll spend some more time looking for leaks so as to decrease the leak rate.
A few feet downstream from the Aux compressor my bus has two SMC water traps/filters. Originally, Liberty had installed only one. I installed the second one 3 yrs ago. I’m glad I did. The second traps catches a little water too. Is moisture getting past the second trap too? Probably, and that can’t be good. Too remove any moisture that may be getting by the 2 SMC water traps/filters, I decided to install a Wix AquaChek ACK10 compressed air moisture removal kit. I’ll change its spin-on filter every yr or two.
