I have several friends and acquaintances that have lived and travled all over Mexico for many, many years as missionaries. Some of them have had to abandon their mission works, churches, camps, schools and homes because they were under direct threat from cartels or cartel wannabes. Others have had to alter their travel routes or mode of travel but their work and lives in Mexico continues.

ALL of them that are still driving in Mexico are driving old vehicles and absolutely NO shiny SUV’s or new trucks. Those seem to be targets. They say the last thing they want to do is attract attention and it seems the shiny transportation is a surefire way to get unwanted attention.

That would prevent me from driving into Mexico in a shiny XL that looks new to the very untrained eye. However, I would not and have not hesitated to travel with my family to several remote areas of Mexico to sing and preach over the last several years. We have tried to be careful but have felt completely safe.

Honestly, I feel like the shiny stainless makes me as much of a target in some of the US cities I set up in as it does in Mexico. It is a bad world with bad people but those are the folks I am trying to reach.
